• What misconceptions and mistakes (scientific, etc) really bother you in games?

50 cal bullets or heavy machineguns not doing any damage to a jeep, or a chicken.
For the people talking about reloading the M1 Garand.
Trace the encryption? What the shit? What game used that?
I think that one was a movie, actually, but games can be bad about it too. Most importantly, the distinction between "hacking" and "cracking". I haven't seen any mass media yet that gets it right.
Guns, all around. Twice over for a generic gun that is made out to be a gift of god himself. (AK-47s, Barret .50 Snipers, Miniguns.) Big-bad-enemies always having a really convenient weak spot. Cardboard-thin wood stopping sniper bullets. Melee having ridiculously high damage. Pistols and low-tier guns being useless. Desert Eagles that are actually useful. Tracers being fired from everything.
Uh, yes, but for one thing, I'd like to see how you carry your oxygen on a laser (i.e. Star Wars), and for the second, which kind of supports the first I suppose, not many space games have actual "missiles" that you would be able to attach some sort of oxygen chamber to. The most logical thing to do would be to make a weapon to punch through metal so you can kill everyone in that chamber, but lasers serve that purpose fairly well.
All you need is a large enough explosive and to aim at the right spot. Oxidising isn't a problem because every ship has ample oxygen on board to keep it's crew alive. Though lasers making ships explode is just silly. Even if it was a reactor breach somehow, most ships should be able to eject the reactor in case of such a disaster.

It makes them explode better, because oxidizers contain more oxygen than air. That's why explosives work underwater: the combustion gets its O2 not from air, but from chemicals like H2O2 or N2O4.
Bullets leaving the barrel at 45 degree angles or more.
Unrealistic damage. If I shoot a guy in the head with a sniper rifle, you don't really walk away from that unscathed. Same thing with buckshot to the face. STALKER is bad in that some of the mutants are tough, I swear it took 4 point blank shells from my Protecta to kill a goddamn boar. On STALKER difficulty.
The lack of mechanical sense the Valve team have with their vehicles.. The Buggy was bad (Square metal box with fan is engine?) But the Jalopy is just criminal. Pick that car up and examine it. IT MAKES NO MOTHERFUCKING SENSE!! Nothing is right, Not the cooling, the exhaust. the drivetrain. NOTHING!! Has anyone at valve even seen a real car?
You sure? The tanks in BF2 moved at like 20 miles per hour and most maps had this fog that didn't allow you to pick off armored vehicles at 1-4000 meters away.
The tanks in BF2 moved fast imo. AIX really improves on some of the realism aspects of the game as well.
Hey thats just like singularity and I fucking waste all my ammo minigun on one of then and theres 2 more shooting me. Also how the m95 does like no damage to a tank its a fucking anti tank rifle!
It can't penetrate a main battle tank. Sure, an IFV or some other light tank, not a MBT.
I don't really give a fuck, if something's not quite right or has to be changed it's going to be for gameplay reasons.
What is it with all the fuss about explosions in space? Plastic explosives would work perfectly well, it's a spontaneus decomposition of a single chemical substance, not a reaction of oxygen and the explosive. If it would make sense to use explosives in space is a completely different question, as there is no air which would allow the shockwave to travel through as medium. Only a direct hit would do severe damage.
Tec-9s being fully auto.
Destroyed vehicles instantly turning into a jet black burnt out corpse. They only look like that after they've been on fire for a few hours.
Tec-9s being fully auto.
You can modify the mechanism inside the gun or completely replace it.

There is no shockwave, but because of the pressure differential between the explosive and the space around it, aswell as the lack of air resistance, fragments of metal would be many many times more lethal than they are in an atmosphere. A direct hit by explosion is not what you're after, but rather a direct hit by a fragment. Smashing up and most importantly puncturing the enemy ship is what you want to acheive. Fighting would be best done with missiles and ballistics. Space flak is pretty feasable aswell.
I hate how they portrait most of the things wrong in COD games now.
it's funny because the majority of the things people have posted in this thread are for balancing reasons or to improve the gameplay experience. Explosions in space? more exciting. Silencers that actually make your guns quiet? well if they didn't stealth sections would be shit. Shotguns not working at distance? if they did they would be unbalanced alongside other weapons. It's pretty simple.

Hurr durr I destroy enemy main battle tank with HE shells.
When you reload a 50 round weapon with a bullet chambered you have 50 rounds instead of 51. WTF happened to the chambered round?
Metal Gear Solid 4 had it so the chambered round stays in.
Metal Gear Solid 4 had it so the chambered round stays in.
That's because Hideo Kojima gets a hard on for little details. They have it in Rainbow 6 Vegas too.
-All Russians are communist terrorist organisations who want to take down the western Powers. -In world war 2 There were, The Germans, The Russians, The Americans, The Japanese AND NOBODY ELSE!
In FEAR, you could slide-kick someone to death. Your foot, making contact with their foot, resulted in them instantly collapsing to the ground. It was more effective than gunfire. The melee being a one hit kill thing has been in other games too, but FEAR stands out as making it even more ridiculous. Shotgun blast? Ineffective. Kick to the shin? Lethal.
It didn't kill the mechs, I tried :frown:
Russians actually suck. Still illegally spying and assassinating journalists and such. America sucks too.
This, it seems as though the developers are people that use this map: [img_thumb]http://www.thisplacesucks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/shepmapsmallns6.gif[/img_thumb]
Devs ignore the euroweenies part, at least for the UK.
