I heard about it from my friends and played gmod, dod:s, and tf2 at their house.
I found it a long time ago when I tried to play Half-Life online and WON wouldn't work, so I googled for a solution and that led me to Steam.
Got it in '05 when I bought HL2. Seems a lot of people don't remember how shitty steam used to be.
Zombie gaming clan I knew used it and I talked to people on it. I forgot about my account for a year until I got L4D1/2 and now I use it frequently.
Found out about it (and Facepunch, TBH) after buying The Orange Box for the Xbox.
Thank you for changing my life Valve, Garrysmod, and Facepunch. You showed me how blind I was.
I owned all the classic Half Life games and Expansions as well as TF:C, then when I wanted to play them again years later I heard about steam and just registered my Half Life games through there.
Way back when it released, just a month after.
My dad played Team fortress 2 since I was 9. I found out about Half Life 2 Deathmatch and wanted to play the story and realised that my dad had bought the orange box, so we shared an account for awhile until I raised some money to get my own account.
(He's played since 07.)
I originally had HL Platinum and found out about it when I went to try and play CS on WON.
That was after my idiot friend told me I needed Gamespy.
I got Steam with retail Portal and, half a year later, got a digital copy of the Orange Box. Valve, you ridiculously-high-quality-game-developing bastards. :arghfist::v:
I wanted a video game demo.

You're either eleven or twelve years old. :eng101:
I remember getting Steam way back in 2004 when Half Life 2 came out, and it was a bit of a hassle at first. But after using it for about 6 years now, it's hard to imagine PC gaming without it.
It's a pretty long story. First started out when I was googling fun games to play. I found this one called Soldat (it's like a 2-D counter strike, only you respawn). Anyway, it was described as a 2D counter strike. After I played that game for a few months, I decided to find out what this mysterious counter strike was. I googled that, and found steam. I found the NVIDA offer to get free hl2:DM and so for about a year that was all I played. Next, I got tf2 and gmod. then so on and so forth.
I found out about it from a friend at school, a few years back. It was a great day.
counter strike source
Was at Disney Land like ten years ago when a friend goes "Hey they finally released CS1.6, we should but it."
Never looked back. :)
Super awesome Friend told me about it and hassled me into getting it.
people who didn't get steam back in 2003 are a bunch of noobs.
My god, you actually are retarded.
My brother showed me steam.
Me and my dad used to play Counter strike (whatever version it was I don't remember anymore) and Steam had just come out. We (me/my dad) made an account about 10 days after steam first came out.
half life 2 GOTY edition
Got it when my dad got me a new computer and The Orange Box for Christmas one year.
Friend had CS 1.6 and I played it on his PC until the CSS beta came out. Then went and got CSS and got my first steam account.

Well when I wanted portal, reallllly bad, and the demo didnt run on my olllld pc, the user I quote gave me his spare account with portal, and i still have it to this day.
:buddy:
I heard about Steam while browsing on youtube. (videos about HL2, or GMod videos.)

Somewhere at the beginning of the last year.
from my brother cause he started one
Back in '06 in a cybercafe. Didn't got interested on it though. Then i installed it on my PC for Garry's Mod at end of '08.
I had HL WON Version, and then Valve deleted the server and released Steam.
Damnit, I've got a freakin' old account.
