Buying Garry's Mod
When the first Half-Life 2 set came out (it came on like, 5 cds, lol) it had me download Steam to work with it. That was back when I had dialup, so steam sucked balls then. Now I wouldn't have it any other way.
Friend told me to get Half Life 2 MP pack....at the store, so I did, but i had dial up...1 week pass'd by, I got a new computer and a good enough DSL speed.... So...that was back in 05.....oh dear :(

I played Half-life and then I was all like "Is there a sequel to this game?" I looked it up and downloaded the Half-life 2 demo which required me to get steam and I was hooked from then on.
When I got the first Half-Life in 2005.
I remember reading about it in a game magazine when it was announced. Also, you needed it for Half Life 2. Must've been 2004.

My step-dad bought HL1 which installed steam. I played it and really enjoyed it. Not sure when it was, but it was probably six months to a year prior to HL2 being released.

I was looking for games with physics and came across the ragdoll kung-fu demo, and I downloaded it to play that. Very (within a matter of days) I found out about Garry's Mod.
From my cousin who had CS 1.6.
When HL2 was released, all the video game magazines were crying because it forced you to use Steam.
L4D2 Demo required it
The 1.6 patch for counter strike.
