I got it when it first came out, I can't remember very well, it was pretty long ago.
Went to my cousins and saw him playing CSS and Gmod, i got it a couple months later, with css being my first game.
I found an old box with Counter Strike Anthology on it. I installed it, played it, and loved it. However, the cd-key gave me CSS instead of CS 1.6. I didn't notice this untill recently, but I don't mind it, since I've already gotten 1.6 by now soo.
I wanted Garry's Mod.
When I got really interested in Gmod.
My Friend suggested it to me.
I don't remember where I heard of Garry's Mod from, but I searched for youtube videos, and found it was a mod for Hl2, I looked into that and eventually got the orange box on CD, which installed steam automatically.
When it installed with HL2.

My brother played cs 1.6 a lot back in the day and i thought it was cool, and he let me play cs 1.6. I made my own steam account as soon as steam was released even though i had no idea how to get the game. My brother bought me the game and taught me how to use steam. pretty much it.
I thought TF2 and Portal looked neat, and they got me into Steam and Valve in general.
