This is what I do, passes the time easily.
Anyone have a modified version of the Brown & Bloom texture pack with animated water? Everything in it looks great except water which really bugs me.
I always get coal first once I have wood blocks and a pickaxe and a workbench.

I don't understand powered minecarts.. I thought if you right click them they move indefinitely?
When I right click them they just shoot forward for a few seconds and stop?
I thought their purpose was to push other carts without player interaction?

I don't know if you guys know this already but if you go into the craft or smelt menus you can minimize the game and it'll still run un paused, great for passing on the night

Yeah, that's very helpful. You can also do it with the inventory. I usually do it while waiting for something to smelt, or I just don't feel like staring at the moon waiting for the morning.

You have to click them with your desired fuel out ( coal or wood)
