Is there a "real" downside to using an SMG with the MG?
I like using the Pistol + Katana combo, but I couldn't really do anything to a guy using SMG/MG. At long range, his MG was pretty much as good as my pistol, but at close range he chewed through my block with the SMG and finished me off with the MG. I don't really know what to do against a loadout like that.
Keeping my distance is one way, but in a close-quarters map like Fishy Business in Neo Tokyo, that can be a bit difficult.
Just screwing around in custom servers using only environmental weapons now.
A new update was released with a new gamemode called Expendables. In the gamemode there are two teams, the "good guys" and henchmen. The good guys can heal and select their loadouts but have respawn timers (like with team deathmatch these timers increase as more players on your team die). The henchmen are all identical, have fast respawns and spawn with a random weapon(guns have unlimited ammo). Henchmen are unable to interact with any objects within a level. After all the good guys have been killed the roles are reversed. In this gamemode the winning team is the one which has the most henchmen kills by the end of two rounds. If you're still a little confused I recommend trying it yourself as it can be pretty fun.
If you've been waiting for a key it might be worthwhile to check your inbox. I think more keys must have been sent out since I've been noting a lot of new players.
Another update was released today which added a new map, a new gamemode, a new weapon(a rifle) and removed team deathmatch.
The new gamemode, called "one man army", involves players taking turns in fighting henchmen controlled by other players in the match (for a description of what henchmen are see my previous post).
Again more beta keys were probably sent out with this update so check your inbox if you signed up.
One man army mode is pretty fucking cool
The spawns in that are glorious.
Launching yourself with a rocket boot roll is the best thing ever.
I hate this peer of peer stuff. I frequently see people with 200+ ping on servers with full bars, and almost never see someone with under 100.

Why is it servers for Australia that have full green bars in the latency when I'm in the US?
I can find four fucking servers while everyone else can find tons. I can't even play with people I know. Goddamnit.

The game seems really enjoyable but very underdone in launch content and the community has seemed pretty small.

I don't think if I'm going to like this. I watched the pre-alpha video in the OP and really liked the looks of it and how it worked.
Videos of the beta version, though, show that the game seems to be going in a more generic direction. Now it's more like a sidescrolling shooter with few gimmicks.

Does anybody now if there's gonna be a wipe when game releases? Also throwing weapons are pretty goddamn OP right now, you don't really have to aim with them and they deal tons of damage.

Of course, there will be nothing from beta saved in the full game. You have to work to get it back.
