Nope. Once you smelt it it stays that way. Breaking a diamond block will give you a diamond block back.

Yeah you can. Just place it in the crafting blocks and you'll get 9 diamonds back. I think it works for gold and iron too.

I just got an idea for what the currency could be after lurking the Minecraft Forums. Flint could be a good standard currency? What do you think? I'd still want to trade other items though.

It's good for compacting and storing 9 diamond ores. I use that in my shop to store all my ore. Speaking of my shop, here's some screens of it.

Just put any ore block in the crafting menu and you can get the 9 items back.
For example like this, when this is the crafting menu and the X is your diamond block

You can put it anywhere in the menu, tho.
