Diablo 2.
Median XL mod adds A TON of new stuff.
I'm not saying Torchlight is a bad game, I still play it time to time, and I can't wait for Torchlight 2
Torchlight was much more fun than Diablo 2.
But it doesn't have multiplayer so its replay value goes down the drain.
Diablo 2 co-op is fun as hell though.
The only thing Torchlight beats Diablo 2 at is quality of graphics.
D2 had what, 7 classes? And they were all unique, really different from one another. Torchlight has 3 classes, and most of their skills are shared. There aren't unique playstyles to the Torchlight classes either. It's kind of like they INTENDED to have a melee character, a ranged character, and a magical character, but they can all be played in any way. It's not hard to play a melee alchemist or a magical vanquisher or whatever. Also, it's not like Diablo 2 where you pretty much have to pick one skill tree for your character to do really well. You can distribute your skill points all over the place, max them out in no time, then start filling up another skill tree just because it's the only option you have left. The divided skill trees of D2 make it more like each of the 7 classes have 3 sub-classes that all play differently.
Diablo 2 just has more... Everything. More character classes, more gameplay time, more items, more varieties of monsters.
The whole "grinding" argument is bullshit for either game. I've played through both of them, and at no point in either game is there a point that you NEED to grind. But both of them have plenty of grinding capacity if you seek out grinding. People will do boss runs of D2 all day long, and Torchlight has an endless dungeon (which gets VERY repetitive and boring after 10-20 floors).
Torchlight is pretty much just Diablo Jr. It's not a matter of nostalgia for me either, because I never played Diablo 2 until 3-4 years ago. Even as old as it is, I think the only real competition could be Diablo 2 vs. Titan Quest. No other dungeon-crawler I've played has come close.
Diablo 2 is outdated as shit, Torchlight was a nice little throwback but it lacked multiplayer, which was the only thing I liked about Diablo 2.
just my opinion, probably gonna be a huge spergy discussion about this though
I honestly don't find what's so amazingly great about diablo 2, I mean yeah it's a good game and all but god damn lay off of the fucking fanboyism for just one second.
I prefer Torchlight. It just needs multiplayer.
I'd say torchlight, but I've barely played diablo and I've played torchlight for about 30 hours.
I vow to play Diablo 2 at some point.
I wouldn't say I'm a graphics whore but torchlight is definitely easier on the eyes. Hopefully Diablo 3 will be the awesome game to rule them all.
I'll reserve judgement until I play Torchlight II since it's going to make the world even bigger.
It's only fair since the original Diablo was essentially an upper area and an endless dungeon as well.
It's fourty dollars.
No, it's not.
Also, why are you comparing Diablo II with Torchlight? I thought that it was more similar to the first game.
We're comparing Diablo 2 in this thread, silly. Hence the "Torchlight vs Diablo TWO" title.
I'm more interested in Torchlight than Diablo 2, and I'm more interested in Torchlight 2 than Diablo 3.

That's exactly what I said.
-snip-
Torchlight bores me. The endless dungeon is the same floor after floor, no difference aside from the monsters and the visuals. Diabo II is a lot different from area to area, it has a TON more variety and content. It's also a bit more challenging. You don't get endless amounts of health potions, identifying items is a bit more expensive, and enemies can actually kill you. Torchlight is a bit too easy, no matter what you're almost always as powerful as the enemy in front of you. Health potions drop like crazy, you'll almost never run out.
Torchlight is more for casual gamers, Diablo 2 caters to the regular ones.
When I play Torchlight, I find half of the skill rather useless. The game is also ridiculously easy, even on the hardest mode. All you have to do is get a little bit of lifesteal and stock up on potions.
That's exactly what I said.
I hit the Reply button on the wrong post. Sorry. :(
I've had diablo 2 for as long as i can remember. I've never played torchlight, but even though it has actual 3d graphics, i don't like the style from the screenshots i've seen. So i'd have to go with diablo 2, but my vote isn't really valid.

Deckard Cain says hi.
Actually I think the whole mechanic of identifying items is just a pointless bit of tedium in any dungeon-crawler. It's only a hindrance when you're around level 1-5, and from then on, you have so much money that the identification scrolls might as well be free. That's one of the things I really liked about Titan Quest. They took the tedium out of identifying items and making town portals.
To be honest, I love the identifying items bullshit.
When you see a unique drop on the ground you're like "Oh shit! I hope it's ________" and can set you up for either massive disappointment or great joy.
It just adds to the experience for me.
Diablo 2 because to me, the long and repetitive monster slaying isn't worth it if there is no multiplayer as well (although the Torchlight team said that they would add multiplayer in 2010)
What the fuck are you seriously trying to compare a game that's nearly ten years older and yet the older game still wins by a wide margin?
Diablo 2 of course, the cartoony look of Torchlight can not match the gritty grim look of Diablo.
Diablo, because Torchlight is a complete copy of Diablo and lacks multiplayer. Torchlight was fun however.

because older = worse m i rite

Pretty much this. I never even beat Torchlight before I got bored.
Pretty much this. I never even beat Torchlight before I got bored.
This pretty much takes all the point of going to Best Buy today for a boxed copy of Torchlight.
I might hit Gamestop instead for the Diablo 2 Battle Chest or whatever.
Diablo 2 Obviously
I just tried running diablo 2, didn't work but i saw it as a process in the task manager. Any help?
