If you want judgment from people not just pulling shit out of their asses, both games are similarly rated by critics/users. Torchlight at 83/88, Diablo 2 at 88/78, and D2:LoD at 87/92.

You'll find happiness in both.
Diablo II definitely. Torchlight is so bland, the skills are so underpowered and rather boring. The story is almost negligible and the items are all the same with just a slightly better upgrade. Hell, all you have to do is get the 100% enchant addon and you don't ever have to replace your weapon.
And @Jabberwock09, I "ignored" most of the post because it was all uneducated bullshit.
Too late bro.
I bought Torchlight. (YOU FUCKING WHAT?)
Oh yeah I did. It was a good investment too. To be honest I know you all are going to disagree with me but something about watching 3 nether imps, an alchemic golem, and a ferret (who likes to be a spider) tanking while i spam Pyre and Ember Lance at douchebag dragons in the Black Fortress really made me like this game. (Derp Arcane/Lore Alchemist. They're fun.)
The story in Torchlight was simple and it made sense. (To be honest games like this are always paper thin on story and if they weren't they wouldn't be action RPGs. They'd be no fun.)
I did not get the whole "the skills are underpowered" comment. I found myself quite powerful launching Pyre Fire everywhere. I did very decent damage too. The same goes for well... almost every other skill. I think you kind of missed the whole "rank up your skills because that makes them more powerful" part. Sure there are a couple shitty skills out there (Ember Lightning) but what game doesn't have those?
I also didn't get the "all items are the same" comment. The only time I ever found two items that were similar stats wise (Shit uses the same icons and models sometimes, it's mostly the Gray items that you never really see too much past level 15ish) was when i found Midas' Necklace/Chain (or whatever) twice. Sorry I'm disagreeing with you here but this is from my experiences. Im going to bed. Cheers.

Glad to hear you enjoy the game. Ninja seems to have serious animosity towards torchlight, which is fine, but he also seems to think his opinion is fact.

It's not animosity, it's the fact that it bored me to tears. I'm fine with other people enjoying this game (AMG WHAT!?! SOMEONE AGREES WITH FUN!?!?!), I just personally don't understand how someone enjoys this game.

I found Torchlight to be just as enjoyable as Diablo 2.
The only two things Diablo 2 has over Torchlight is a story and multiplayer.
But that will soon change with Torchlight 2.
Seriously though, Torchlight is, for all intents and purposes, Diablo 1 in 3D where the sequel will be like Diablo 2 in 3D.
So comparing it to Diablo 2 is very unfair.

Read my posts instead of skipping over them?
Torchlight 2 better have camera control.
