What do you mean micromanagement?
It's ordering around your units on the small scale, using your intelligence to get more out of them.
For example if you have some ranged units being chased by melee units, you could micro the ranged units by swapping between running away and shooting at them. That way you keep them out of melee range.
These are like, my favourite RTSes.
Another extremely good (and *drumroll* free!) RTS games are:
Warzone 2100:

Warzone has an extremely long campaign and it contains absolutely shittons of research to do. It's great fun, and quite difficult. Artillery plays a very important role in the game, as its range and firepower is considerable. Likely the best free RTS.
Ground Control:

I'm not saying it's bad, it's just that in Warcraft and Starcraft there's a tad too much of it.
Ah alright :)
Now this is promising, something that requires no need to spend money. I'll check these out now ;)
- I've just ordered World in Conflict, it sounded pretty fun. :) - also downlaoded warzone 2100 :)
Thanks people!
Command and Conquer: The First Decade.
TA is better then Starcraft, IMO. The best player in the game only averages 90 apm, because the game is so much about actual strategy rather then having a 300 apm game of rock paper scissors.

What's TA?
Rise of Nations : Rise of Legends

Total Annihilation.
What is apm?
- Also, i downloaded that free Warzone 2100.... i've just played it online with a friend, and somehow lost the last 3 hours of my life, but my god it was worth it, it's awesome! - so complex and in depth. - If anyone is just browsing this looking for a cure for boredom, get it!
Starcraft 2
Age of Mythology
Rise of Nations
Dawn of War (DoW1 and expansions, not DoW2)
And, you should consider Battle Zone II, a vehicle-based first/third person RTS.
Universe at War is a good one.
Anything C&C earlier than C&C 3. Nothing later than Generals: Zero Hour.
Also, Warzone 2100 all the way!

Actions Per Minute
AKA how many commands can you issue in an RTS game in one minute
The best starcraft players do around 300-400 APM (they are obviously korean), which is why the game series is labeled as so micro-heavy because the better APM you have the better you will do
Starcraft 2.
-snip-
Starcraft 1 (havent played 2 so I dont know)
Age of Mythology
Age of Empires 2
WH40k Dawn of War 1 and 2 (2 has a different playstyle though, no base building)
Red Alert 1 and 2 (3 was mediocre compared to 1 and 2)
Warcraft 2 (I heard WC3 was good as well)
Company of Heroes
Supreme Commander

I loved this one.
Mobygames.com is my favorite too
Battlezone II or Battlezone, Battlezone is now freeware. Both are combined vehicle FPS / RTS games; you pilot a hovertank, tracked, or walking vehicles (or go on foot) in first or third person view, while building a base and offensive/defensive/utility units. It has two singleplayer campaigns, one for the USA and one for the Soviet Union, and multiplayer.
Battlezone II has far better graphics, but it's a much slower game, and isn't free.

Suddenly I want to install this again.

!
The Command and Conquer (aside from Generals and ZH) really should have stayed 2D. EA seems to have this crazy idea that 3D is always better.
300 - 400 actions per minute....
...
that means 7 moves a second. Don't see that happening somehow.
Starcraft 2 is pretty fun, it has a great storyline.
Rise of Nations has a lot of features and different countries.
Age of Empires 3 is excellent in all aspects.

It's like The Orange Box of rts games.

Well, technically, Renegade is a FPS and a TPS.

3D is modern. Most children nowadays won't purchase a game just because of it's graphics not being shiney.

Oh man, I wish there were more RTS-FPS hybrids like Battlezone. It's a shame such a good idea hasn't been played with much in recent years.
No love for Sins of a Solar Empire?
Company of Heroes, theres a decent amount of micro-management but it's fun.
