Starcraft II Megathread V.1 'Hell, It's About Time'
Is it weird that I enjoy watching people play Starcraft more than actually playing it? Seeing the pros play is like poetry in motion, it's awesome.
I agree with you a thousand times, which is why I think it's retarded that making an observer prevents a game from being public.

It does that so you won't be joining random games with people watching. I'm sure there are some people out there who'd prefer not to be observed without permission. If you want to watch live matches, just get some people together and add em. I'd enjoy watching some matches between FP players.
[editline]12:15PM[/editline]
So far, I've only played against 1 FP'er (-chu-)

You're treating these things like they are mutually exclusive. In warcraft 3 you could set a game so people can come and observe, and you know when people are observing so when you start the game you understand that people will be watching.

NA servers? I need FPers to train my Z. If all else fails, I can always play my main, Terran.
I hope the patch comes soon. Possible suggestions?
- Queen AA dmg +1
- Roach get +1 armor or faster regen unburrowed... I don't know about making 'em 1 supply
- Lower tunneling claws cost
- Hydras -25 gas cost or buff 'em to warrant their cost
- Marauder Stim cost increase to 30 HP
- Concussive shells research cost to AT LEAST 75/75
... something has to be done about stim, really. The problem aren't marauders or the almighty terran bioball, but stimpacks.
What do you guys think?
Hydras are already really cost effective. I think that marauders shouldn't be able to stim at all like in the campaign. EMP should have to be researched. Roaches are already cost effective too. Zerg just needs better anti air.
The EMP should have to charge up. Even if it's only a few seconds.

The next patch will most probably buff Zerg and nerf Terran. Protoss are fine really. Zerg need a buff though, heck even Dimaga is changing to Terran, and Sheth (and others) are practising Terran for an eventual switch.

I don't think it should have to charge, I think they should slow down the speed of the projectile. If Storm can easily be dodged, why shouldn't EMP be?

I play Random btw.
[editline]9:47AM[/editline]
Shouldn't have to tell ya which one I am (but if I must, I'm the red Zerg)
Oh, and the last 2 minutes is just me mopping up his base after he left. I always do that, makes me feel better about myself.
[editline]9:53AM[/editline]
Jesus, I averaged 83 APM by the end. I guess listening to Command and Conquer music while playing helps :v:
I only got around 4:30 in because I felt like playing 1v1, but here's what I've observed so far:
Move your overlord faster: You didn't move your overlord until 15 seconds in, which is another 15 seconds you are away from knowing what your opponent is up to.
Tighten up your macro!: There are many points in the beginning when you are able to get a drone, but you don't start it until you are 5-15 minerals over. Doesn't seem like much in the beginning, but it adds up in the long run. About when I stopped the replay, you had 400 unused minerals, and not a drone moving for an expo.
Watch your supply: You got supply blocked at the end. Don't do that, kthx.
Pointless spine crawler: You made a spine crawler by your mineral line, despite the fact that they weren't moving out. You shouldn't put them down unless you see them move out or your attack fails miserably and are afraid of a counter push.
No queen?: You didn't even have a queen in production by the time I closed the replay. I don't know if this was a part of your build (queenless strats are becoming more common in ZvT), but if it wasn't, your queen is way late in the making.
That's all I got from 4 minutes. I might finish it later, but I don't plan on it right now.

Oh man. You didn't even watch the whole thing and you're judging what I did. Well, time to dissect and fight for myself.

"Move your overlord faster"
I was lagging during the first minute of the match, this isn't reflected in the replay. I always send my overlord as soon as I can. 15 seconds of not knowing where my opponent is won't matter during the first 30 seconds of the match, especially when he's actually right across from me.
"Tighten up your macro!"
What? If you only got 4 minutes in, then you don't see that I actually did grab an expansion, and that I used the minerals to make Zerglings + more drones. I wasn't a Terran or Protoss, I can't queue up units and forget about it. Using larvae properly was key. How dare you insult my Zerg Macro :argh:
"Watch your supply"
If you had watched, you would see that I do get overlords when getting close to supply, and they would generally come out right as I reached it. The first overlord I got was actually supposed to be made at 9 but I hit D for drones by accident. Considering you got 4 minutes in, I know you aren't talking about the time I actually did get supply blocked at an inappropriate time, but I quickly made plenty of overlords to compensate.
"Pointless spine crawler"
Pointless? It's called precaution buddy. As a Zerg, I generally don't like being caught with my pants down by a 2gate zealot push. I moved the spine crawler down to my expansion to cover it, and it did help delay the other player's attack force long enough for me to get mine out.
No queen?
Holy jesus, what? I started producing my queen directly after my Spawning Pool finished. In fact, that's why I didn't make any other units when I got to 16/18, to prevent myself from getting supply blocked for the queen (I was making an overlord at this time too so I could continue by the time queen production started) If you had watched past the opening game, you'd see I had plenty of queens.
[editline]1:13PM[/editline]
Now get back in and watch it all before continuing. kthx.

Please for the love of god stop having 2000+ minerals and 13 larva at each hatchery. It's fucking ridiculous. You could have at least dumped it into zerglings and just won straight out seeing as his ramp wasn't blocked. Not to mention after that first skirmish you really should have just pushed to the win.
The larva thing is the biggest, you are like whoring larva for whatever reason, I don't know if you just like making 30 units at one time or whatever but it is bad. At your expo you waited till you had like 10 larva to start making drones... like wat is that it makes no sense.

Of course I'm gonna defend against it, I have my legitimate reasons that you never saw unfold. I'm not offended by criticism, I'm offended you watched 4 minutes of the match and acted like what I did was for the entirety of it. It's like watching the beginning of the movie and then questioning something that actually is revealed later on to have been a significant event.
I'm not trying to sound like a condescending dick here, but at least watch more than me making drones.

He listed small time things, most of which were leading up to things he never saw in his "4 minute" viewing. Your snarky comment wasn't needed. Maybe you should watch the replay yourself and make your own criticism.
*helpful words*
Here we go, this is what I wanted to see.
"Please for the love of god stop having 2000+ minerals and 13 larva at each hatchery."
Yeah, I was saving for Hydras at the end bit, with 2 bases running, I ended up mineral heavy. I should've expanded with all my resources + get some better defenses.
"The larva thing is the biggest, you are like whoring larva for whatever reason"
I wasn't trying to "whore" larvae, I wanted those larvae to be used for Hydras and Roaches, I didn't wanna waste them on 26 zerglings and then curse myself for not having enough larvae to make em. However, I think I should've had more hatcheries for larvae so I could use those instead of saving up the little I had.
"You could have at least dumped it into zerglings and just won straight out seeing as his ramp wasn't blocked."
That wouldn't have worked, he had plenty of Zealots blocking the way. If you saw, all of my Zerglings died when I pushed in, only serving to help absorb damage as my roaches shot at the zealots. His ramp wasn't "blocked" per-say, but it was walled in a way that would prevent a straight run in with Speedlings.
"After that first skirmish you really should have just pushed to the win"
I agree, I should've made a push then, but I didn't want to hit him and then lose all of my units since I didn't know what he had the time. I was annoyed when I saw he didn't have his voidrays out at that time during the replay.
"Spend more money"
I did have an extreme excess of minerals, yeah. It's hard to not have an excess of minerals when I'm playing Zerg, since their later units use a lot of gas compared to minerals (which you're always getting in mass) It's why you'll see Muta + Ling builds.
"Get Glial Reconstitution faster, same with Grooved Spines"
I didn't get roach speed right away because I initially got them to defend. Considering their price, I usually research it when I can spare the vespene gas (which I barely had any of). About the grooved spines, I don't think it would've helped without having Burrow researched first(unless they can burrow with only that upgrade, then never mind.)
Thanks for the input, wish you had put more.

Some other notes from watching the replay again.

I had a general lack of knowledge about what the Protoss was doing and what he had/didn't have, I could have done a lot more had I sent in the occasional overlord scout to see into his base. I didn't even know about his expansion till I sent a Zergling at the end to check around for one.

I could've had more expansions running for gas and production. It's probably because I'm used to Terran and Protoss (both of which can effectively run off of a single base and have individual production buildings).

I wasn't getting gas at full capacity for a long time (sitting on 1 extractor for most of the game) and even towards the end I forgot to put some drones on the new extractors.

I never got a chance to upgrade and I barely spread any creep.

How would I harrass quickly and effectively as Toss?
Is playing random good for begginers?
Are there any players on EU here who would like to play sometime?
What does it take to leave he bronze league ( not too important for me right now I'm still in the practice league and changing my region to EU soon so I'm not going to be in bronze for a while...)
how do the leagues work?

Don't stay in the practice league, it's slower and the natural blocking doesn't allow for many early tactics, go straight to placement and get into whatever league you can, I wouldn't recommend random as a beginner unless you're extremely indecisive play some cpu matches against the hard AI and try to get used to one race.
I got into silver by sheer luck for playing against 3 awful players in a row, one terran got 2 marines out when I had about 8 zealots coming out of my initial gateway, a protoss was also a slow starter and the final protoss just massed zealots outside my base so I blocked my ramp built some void rays to wipe his army out
Agria Valley, great 1v1 map or greatest 1v1 map?
To answer SunBird's post:

How would I harrass quickly and effectively as Toss?
Depends on who you go against, Toss isn't that great for harassing until getting into midgame, where you can have Dark Templar drops or just Blink Stalkers into a mineral line. You could try placing proxy cannons near the enemy base to keep him from moving out. Against Zerg, just constantly keep them in moderation with Zealots (Zerglings are horrible against them until they reach critical mass)

Is playing random good for beginners?
Preference really, I played Random most of the time when I started off and I still do, since I don't want to be pinned into the races until I'm decent with all of them. If you want, just experiment with all of the races until you find which suits a good play style for you.

What does it take to leave he bronze league/How do leagues work?
To get out of any league you have to win matches. It gives a check to see how well you're doing in your matches every so often (not sure the exact, I think it was around 30, might be less). It'll rank you up when you've been doing really well (during the beta I started off as Bronze and got to Gold in only a few days) It shouldn't take long once you're actually better than the league you're in.

Not a big fan of that map, so neither.
Hey guys I just bought the game today, after looking my friend play it at his house one week ago. He also lent me his starcraft 1 that day and I've been playing it until now, almost finished the campaign with the Protoss (8th mission I think). I put the disk in to install but apparently my PC can't read it well so I'm downloading the client from Blizard's homepage, should be done in 9 hours (just after I wake up tomorrow, woo!).
So anyway any small tips and pointers I should know as a kind of a starcraft 1 player? I looked at some matches on youtube and I saw some cool units that weren't in starcraft 1, any info about them maybe?

Starcraft 2 definitely has a different feel from SC1. I definitely recommend checking out some commentators such as Day9, HuskyStarcraft, and/or HDStarcraft.
My friend showed me two matches from HDstarcraft I think, they were Idra vs Masq, pretty cool how this apparently "nobody" Masq beat Idra who according to the video is a well-known good player, twice.
shit when does day9 do more dailies, I miss them
