Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising
Kind of felt like BF2, but larger scale I think. I played last year with 100 or so highly active servers, a couple hitting the 100 players mark, but I doubt it is doing well today. The singleplayer was ok but not worth paying full price for.
This. They turned off the master server though... It was one of the best games ever. You could park a jeep onto a chinook and ride up and down the cargo bay while it was flying.
As opposed to "press this to latch onto this vehicle".
Nope.
I have Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising on Steam, still plenty of servers out there, well, usually 1-5 with atleast 20 players on, usually 2 with atleast 60. Some servers require the expansions though, yet it's a really fun game to play.

And awesome on 120 player siege! Or all the special events, like this one 220 player trying to re enact Waterloo!

Team Fortress 2 has its fair share of 40 man server, but unfortunately for you most of them are on 2fort
planetside
The Precursors.
Planetside. Although it's pretty old.

World War 2 Online? Its certainly "massive".
These are the two main MMOFPS games. Both feature hundreds (if not thousands) of players involved in battle, and best of all, it's a large persistant world, meaning your actions actually mean something.
FYI World War 2 Online is officially called Battleground: Europe, just so you don't have trouble finding it. I will warn you though, both of these games have their issues: BE has a pretty mean learning curve and Planetside is slowly dying.
