ewwww, nerds get a life games are 4 kids grow UP!
no one I know gives a shit
Most of the youth today will have a console so in generations to come it'll probably become something that you could chat about with people anywhere, but today, here and now while it's widely accepted by most people, it's not mainstream. I have never been in a situation where i was singled out and hated upon because i played games. I don't hide the fact i play games either but it's not a subject i start talking about to anyone at any time because well it's boring for people who don't play. I generally don't talk about games unless someone else brings the subject up because then you at least know the person your talking to is somewhat interested to an extent. Typically most of the people i know talk about Fifa which ties into real football.
As long as you don't use games to define yourself (unless you aim to go pro), I find most people don't really care. Granted this is Canada and we have one of the highest rates of per capita spending on video games so your mileage may vary.
For all I noticed video games are as tolerated as any other form of media nowadays.
That's a little far-fetched I'd say, perhaps it's more true in western countries, but for the rest, they are still pretty damn far away from equal treatment - here it's next to impossible to get any new game retail for a fair price, I've not seen a single advert of a video game in public space outside an electronics shop, and it is still quite widely regarded by adults as something that "is ruining the kids", and the vast majority of game consumers here are exactly the children and that's not helping the "games are for kids" thing, the very few adults who do play them are often regarded as juvenile. It's definitely far from equality.
I get a lot of reactions like: "I think they are evil!"
What. Who are these people?
There's no social stigma regarding playing games anymore, however there is a social stigma for being a basement dwelling mongoloid. Also this is incredibly hard to believe.
It obviously depends where you live. I get this kind of attitude from people occasionally, but then again I do stay just outside of Glasgow so it's not exactly surprising
When I started my math class during the syllabus meeting my teacher told those who play video games to "Delete them. Video games are a waste of time." To me, I find this insulting, I don't know why video games are treated as the "pointless waste of time" category when gaming is coming through. But my teacher went on to say that the last game she played was "Mario". She even thought that the whole idea of people having jobs to play video games as weird. She said "did you know there are jobs where you can play video games all day?" To me this was also strange because that is like saying "Did you know that there are people who can play poker all day?" The next day during break time she told the class a website where we can watch all TV and movies for free to me this was strange as well. Why is it that playing video games is time wasting but it is perfectly fine to watch movies and TV shows? Yeah, I feel sorry for video games and how they are miss treated differently then other media.
People in my class used to think everyone who would play any kind of videogames was a nerd. They would bascially come up to you randomly and ask if you play World of Warcraft and then giggle like a motherfucker thinking they just said something funny, not believing you if you responded negativly. It never made any sense, but basically anyone who mentioned that they played videogames in any way was automatically that one basement dweller kid playing WoW someone above already mentioned. I never really bring up videogames as a topic except when talking to a few friends I have who are also regularly playing. I don't even think about it really. The whole gamer prejudice thing passed away years ago
Who the fuck calls themselves a gamer Like really If you actually tell other people and identify as a hardcore gamer you're 9/10 probably a cunt.
It seems to have disappeared a bit with the years. Now pretty much everyone I know plays games on consoles or PC.
I call myself a gamer, not a hardcore gamer because that's pointless now days... people hack that's all I call myself a gamer because I enjoy lot's of games, no matter what, obviously if they're good or not..
It seems to have disappeared a bit with the years. Now pretty much everyone I know plays games on consoles or PC.
...As opposed to playing video games on what? [editline]10th July 2013[/editline] Well, maybe phones.
I really hope none unironically identify as "gamers".
i talk about old minecraft battles/raids on castles just because they sound so fucking cool if you tell them right, you know. people get interested because it's just like telling a story, and you don't really need to explain it's a game you play since wtf are you raiding castles irl?
I feel like the people in this thread saying your probably a cunt if you identify as a gamer isn't really far off what the OP is saying. Why shouldn't I tell people I'm a gamer when they ask? I don't really understand. I spend most of my time playing games when I'm not working and I don't see the problem with that, or the problem with other people knowing that. I feel like the people who play games often but shy away from the 'gamer' label are scared of being stereotyped with the usual negative qualities that go with the title, which is pretty sad in itself.
I think you misunderstand, if you are going up to people saying look im a gamer when its completely irrelivent and start talking about videogames all the time in public, you're fucking weird. Trust me i've seen people do this, some people at my college were incapable of talking about anything that wasn't related to videogames. If you talk to people about videogames and say, hey have you played <x>? and start talking about it, whats wrong with that? I feel that when you get past that stage and aren't able to talk about anything else because literally ALL you do is play videogames then you have a problem and thats where the stigma comes from, nobody wants to be around people with a one track mind. It gets old very fast.
I remember I was playing Napoleonic Wars and my black teammate came in my dorm and saw me playin The next 5 minutes consisted of me surrounded by 5 other blacks watching me play the game about the "London niggas with the hats"
Well personally i try to hide the fact that i spend most of my time in computer as good as i can. I also don't talk people about games outside internet. Feels so embarasing to even think about it. But then again i dont have real friends so how could i know. For me its sort of shame since i feel like i should be doing something else but i cant because of many reasons.
this I never say "i'm a gamer".
i've always thought it stupid to define yourself by your hobby anyway basically imo games are perfectly socially accepted, but like every other hobby if you talk about nothing but them you'll be kind of boring
Compared to the 80s or early 90s, I think there is no more social stigma of being a "gamer" anymore. Back in the 90s it seemed that it was more of a niche activity, but nowadays almost everyone I know plays some sort of video games, be it on a console, computer, or even on a phone now. That being said there is still the stigma of the video game addict who somehow manages to be on a game 24/7 with no breaks, and for the most part dependent on their parents or someone else to keep them going. I don't think that's necessarily unfair, honestly if you get addicted to video games it's as bad as anything else.
The whole "games are waste of time" idea is mostly an old people's thing. Most guys around their 20s play video games and have no problem with you talking bout games. It's the girls that complain about how their brother does nothing but play games instead of going out to play football or the parents bitching that their son is playing games instead of being outside. I mean, who cares? You sit in front of the tube all day and you have the nerve to say that playing games is waste of time. If you want your kids to do something else than sit passively in front of the screen, maybe try leading by an example? It's just another case of people blaming their problems on others. Yep, it's the game's fault that your kid is lazy underachiever, it's also the reason why schools get shot up and why racism exists. No doubt.

I've always said that nobody who watches modern tv most of their free time has any right whatsoever to call games a waste of time.
As long as your hobby is paid by yourself, it doesn't harm anyone and it doesn't hinder other things like academic results or work, it's fine, really noone has any right to tell you otherwise.

I noticed that a lot of girls will complain about how video games are a waste of time. But it is ok to watch movies and tv.
im a pansexual female gamer Check your privileges cisgendered scumbags
here's a stark example how many people are hyped up about GTAV i remember when GTA San Andreas came out EVERYONE at work was playing it... EVERYONE people knew Grove Street better than they own town you know GTA's background... killing whores and cops... Jack Thompson and serial killers, mass shootings and shit with that many people hyped up about GTA5, is anyone embarrassed to say they wont be swept up by the game once its realised? is anyone embarrassed to to say they're not GTA5 fans? kids at school play it! if thats what a gamer is, I'm a gamer i have a gaming PC and an xbox and a ps3, i play games... to be fair, i wouldnt line up at midnight to buy GTA5, nor would I buy any console on release day but i do have an active interest in games and the new consoles
