It's still very easy to do it without updating. But it's better just to update.

Try 32 bit. Valve is using 32 bit.
I'm not sure with Ubuntu-based systems, but 32bit shouldn't matter much even on 64bit OSes.
Do you absolutly need to be running GDM ?
I'm running Crunchbang Waldorf with OpenBox, and I'm unable to start steam even thought I have gnome installed. I get (gksudo:4839): « GLib-CRITICAL **: g_str_has_prefix: assertion `str != NULL' failed » when I try to start steam.

What? I used both Lightdm and MDM and no problems
I had a problem with gksudo crashing so I tought I wouldn't be able to start steam without gnome, but after having properly installe it in gdm, I could start it with no problem in openbox. So now it works :)
When I play darwinia under linux, the texture that normally shows up when I place units is replaced with an avatar from my friends list :v:
I'm a little disappointed that they haven't ported goldsrc games yet; it already runs in openGL so I would expect they would have implemented it already.

Thath happens to me in world of goo, and spacechem, i had that problem in a netbook with intel graphic.
When will they fix Braid and SMB?
TF2 sound has a very slow response for me, anyone having this problem too?
Steam for Linux is now a PUBLIC BETA: http://steamcommunity.com/games/221410/announcements/detail/1747660173332716773
Any idea why TF2 doesn't launch and instead just flashes a black screen for a split second?
Tried launching Killing Floor. This is what I get.

I got another computer with HD5450..
fglrx and fglrx from xorg-edgers both can't run any opengl. i can't use xbmc with them only with radeon.
i just want fglrx to work so i could test tf2..
Awful 1080p playback with the radeon driver (xbmc). even with Intel GMA 4500MHD i had smooth experience.
can anyone tell me why the opengl doesn't work at my system when using any fglrx?

And what system is that? What distribution and version?
I'm personally using Sabayon on both my netbook (AMD C-60 processor with 6290 integrated) and my desktop (Some Dell prebuilt system with an Intel Core2Duo 'Viiv' tech, and a ATi HD 4670), and they're both using the open drivers. I haven't had ANY trouble with Steam at all (although the gaming experience is something I have yet to have)

Kubuntu 12.10 fully updated with kernel 3.7. cpu is intel E5200, ram 2GB..
radeon is updated through xorg-edgers.
This is rad, I was just going to set up another linux box, too.
Could be a good boost for Linux
Just got killing floor working, unfortunately it freezes at any time I look at a big clump of zombies.
Any hint of what will be the next source game ported? I would love CS:GO.
I wonder why gold source games weren't ported yet.. they had native opengl rendering, much easier to port.
Anyone get performance boosts in the last tf2 update? My CPU usage was halved (give or take) and on average my core temp dropped 10* from 70* to 60*
Hmph. Why isn't Dungeon Defenders available on Linux via Steam yet I can download it through Humble Bundle?

Is it a wine package?
Only some games are on Steam for Linux, since it's still in beta.

It's not a wine package, It's just not be available through steam yet.

Nope, it uses Unreal Engine 3 which has a native Linux port.
I hope all of the old humble bundle games get a linux version on steam. I added them all manually as non-steam games but it would be nice to get any updates automatically.
It's up to the developers to upload the Linux builds to steam, Valve doesn't touch any games that aren't theirs.

I suppose the majority of them won't be getting any major updates, so it isn't even an imposition really, but still I hope the developers are willing to keep the Linux versions up to date...

You can use mod4(windows key)+left/right arrow keys to put it at a working size.
Has anyone fixed their Amnesia, tf2 and Killing Floor? Tf2 gives me black screen, Amnesia's installer window border appears but then it crashes and Killing Floor's launch picture thing appears but it crashes shortly after.
TF2 works fine 'ere, never had that issue and I've seen a lot of friends playing Killing Floor on Linux.
