Does anyone else have trouble updating steam on a slow internet (70 kb/s avg)? Mine updates to roughly 700 - 800 kb and then says something about it needing it to be online to update, even though I am online.
[editline]24th December 2012[/editline]
heres the console output:
[bumrang@arch ubuntu12_32]$ ./steam
ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt".
libGL error: failed to load driver: i965
libGL error: Try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details.
SteamUpdater: Error: Download of package (tenfoot_fonts_all) failed after 0 bytes (0).
SteamUpdater: Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

Steam works fine on my ubuntu, but TF2 has ridiculous loading times. It just sits there for 5 minutes on "sending client info" and another 5 minutes on "receiving server info". I can join eventually and the rest of the gameplay is fine (good fps, same as on windows, no stuttering etc...) but joining really takes for ever...

I have trouble on 17mbit, sometimes you just have to keep retrying for steam to update or connect.

The problem is that it's doing this constantly. I've tried over and over again and I still get the same thing.
[editline]25th December 2012[/editline]
Every time it stops at downloading tenfoot resources.
[editline]25th December 2012[/editline]
stops at:
tenfoot_fonts_all
tenfoot_ambientsounds_all
tenfoot_all
tenfoot_sounds_all
I've found that there are many issues: steam crashes instantly when trying to open the big picture mode, the UI is horribly slow, the in-game UI doesn't work for me, SPaZ doesn't work at all, stuff like that.
Some of them might be because of my laptop and the fact that it's running gentoo, but I think having a 64-bit version of steam available would fix a few of the issues.
what graphics card do you have?

You need to get a new GPU. The last one I purchased was a 4670, which is newer.I bought it 5 or 6 years ago.
Get Nvidia, not an AMD.
Get Nvidia, not an AMD.
yeah i made the mistake of buying 2x7970
because of them i had to get a new computer (it was a replacement and free but still data lost)
basically long story short somehow both cards literally caught fire
like they had good cooling and right psu and shit but they caught fire, apparently was a defect and I got my whole computer replaced but still
It's a laptop :v:
> durr hurr nvidia or gtfo
get whatever you want, it will most likely work.
I have a Gigabyte AMD 7850.
it works fine, I can play TF2 on linux at playable framerates(occasional crashes on map changes).

AMD is known to have shitty driver support on linux and just general buggyness. I have a 6950 and I regret getting it, so many bugs with the proprietary driver that I had to switch to the open source driver.
Guys, help me once again :o. my HTPC has that HD5450 with no way to play smooth 1080p movies through xbmc. radeon is struggling, fglrx doesn't even work. what should i do?
get proper drivers.
I never had problems with my AMD HD5770, unless when it goes over 4000 fps and starts making a squeaky noise counts as a problem...
God they need to port another source game. I've finished Sword & Sworcery, Limbo, Psychonauts and Braid doesn't work, I'm tired of Team Fortress 2, and I don't have the balls to play Amnesia. :v:

Psychonauts works fine here. What's wrong with it?

It gives me the 'invalid app config' error.

I just received the same error after a reboot. I'm using Arch and Nvidia, not Ubuntu and AMD, so the fix doesn't translate line for line. I'm trying reinstalling the proprietary drivers, mesa, and steam, will report back.
[editline]31st December 2012[/editline]
It appears to have worked! Thank you for the link, Duodecillian.
For arch/nvidia users, all I did was reinstall a bunch of related packages:
$sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils mesa
and steam from the aur
$packer -S steam
Then a reboot and I've had no issues with segfaults... yet.
Team Fortress 2 works nicely with Linux.
Phoronix 'confirmed' a Steam Box that will run in Linux.

A bit off topic, but why do consoles generally use a proprietary OS rather than linux?
A bit off topic, but why do consoles generally use a proprietary OS rather than linux?
No clue, maybe they want an OS to call their own rather than basing it off an already existing one
