so if I were to test Steam for Linux on Mint, would the default install be fine? I know I gotta get my propriety driver for my 7970 from AMD's site, but is any other dicking necessary? Most of my linux distro usage has largely been default settings + propriety video driver (this was before Unity on Ubuntu, so stock Ubuntu was considered fine by many back the)

It's been working fine for me on Mint 13.

Apart from ia32-libs IF you're on 64-bit Mint, yeah, stock should work.

wouldn't 64 bit Linux Mint be ideal? Is getting that file as easy as googling "ia32-libs Mint"?
TF2 still crashes for me.
Edit: Seems it was just because i had my Microsoft keyboard and mouse plugged in.

You just have to open the console and type,
"sudo apt-get install ia32-libs"
Nothing more.
only problems i have with tf2 is poor performance and the font is missing the "2"???????

Seems to be a bug with their font rendering. On my Intel 'card' everything was great, switched to Nvidia and now some characters are missing. Also, it's different characters depending on the font, for example the HUD I use makes use of Futura Medium and the '4' is missing from it, but '2' is fine.
Edit: ty Ol' Pie. Also accepted into beta too :D
Got in the beta, woo.

To fix those font rendering issues, just play the game a few moments with multicore rendering disabled. After you played a bit, you can play with multicore render and with fonts.
Just got into the beta too.
Woke up, checked my email
Welcome to the Steam for Linux limited beta!
Wootwoot!
Just got into the Steam Linux Beta!
I didn't. And I did the survey the same day it went out. Oh well.

And I didn't get to the beta, and I'm now getting a Segfault and running ATI Official Beta Drivers...
./steam.sh: line 255: 5244 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@"
I thought you could use Steam for Linux even without a beta pass?

Yeah that means you're in it.
I fixed the problem starting steam by installing an older release of the beta drivers...
I'm still not able to start TF2 though...
./hl2.sh: line 72: 4716 Segmentation fault (core dumped) ${GAME_DEBUGGER} "${GAMEROOT}"/${GAMEEXE} "$@"
Cool, ill be running ubuntu now and test it out i guess

How?
Make a tiny bash script with a steam icon on your desktop that opens steam steam://open/friends
I managed to start TF2, had to remove Mouse and other useless USB crap I had on...
For those of us using Gentoo or Sabayon: http://gpo.zugaina.org/Overlays/viprea-overlay/games-util/steam

if you've not got beta access, draw something cool.
There needs to be a Linux desktop environment that has a taskbar similar to Windows 7's taskbar. I mean the rest of the GUI I don't care, but damn you can't beat the Windows 7 taskbar, that stole the title for best taskbar from OSX's dock.
There also needs to be a less console fiddling way of install propriety video drivers, I mean c'mon the open source ones are useless unless you enjoy not gaming at all.
Also the whole "ask password for everything dur hur" needs to be optional.
I don't care for security or being some open source guy, I care about the fact that your average Linux distro from a few years ago is superior in terms of kernel and other "under the hood" stuff to Windows in pretty much every way imaginable. But damn Linux GUI's and traditionalism are an anchor to a ship made of diamonds, next to a leaky boat (Windows)
