I know it your opinion, but most people agree that Nylund is one of the best, if not the best, Halo writers. And the others are pretty damn good considering the books are based on videogames.
That doesn't make the books any good. As I said I'm stuck on Ghosts because I can't take one more page of that tripe. I'd love for them to be good, I love Halo. But they aren't.
The story in the games however is masterfully told, which is why I can't wait for Reach and The Cole Protocol. As these are Bungie creations.
Although Halo 3 was a bit of a letdown - no doubt due to the increased focus on the "pros" and design by committee - ODST was created by a small team as a sideproject; but Reach has them pouring their heart into it, so even if there's some bad design decisions in there they seem to realize they need the core vision to shine through strongly even past the new style and clusterfuck that is a 100+ man team.
Well at least the flood will be absent from Reach, they were getting really old and just plain annoying after Halo 2.
EDIT:
That is, unless Bungie severely rapes the canon storyline.
bungie can do whatever they please, they made the series
The uneven elephant was kinda terrible as a plot point. Halo itself already pushed the limits of what was reasonable to endure, even for a super soldier. First Strike was plain ridiculous. And I felt like you, it's almost as if the book was stealing gameplay away from me. Halo 2 established that the Covenant were surprised by the human presence on Earth, but the uneven elephant shits that notion in the face.
Halo Wars is long, long before Reach. Reach is only a few months before CE. If not less. As we are to believe the Pillar of Autumn just escaped Reach with a random jump according to the cole protocol at the beginning of Combat Evolved.
I'm pretty sure it was implied that they thought that either The Ark, or a massive reliquary, was located at Earth. Not humans. They had a massive fleet so they could guard the Hierarch, but when it was blown up they just shrugged and went "oh ok", figuring they wouldn't need a supermassive fleet for a simgple artifact fetching operation.
I read the books too, but you have to separate the books from the game if you actually want to enjoy the game play. Like how in the first game they say your the last Spartan when there are 2(including you) on the Pillar of Autumn, 4 others on Earth and another with ONI.
Overall I'd say that Halo 3 had the most and best features to offer the series so far.
Plus Grey team (I want another book to tell me what the fuck they are doing at the time of Halo 2/3) and the unspecified amount of Spartan 3's that left Onyx just before the shit hit the fan.

I found the Nylund books slightly more better written than Cole Protocol. The best parts of that were the Keyes sections, especially the innie ship at the beginning.
Halo is shit for the most part except for combat evolved.
here's a box for your dumbass
What I've noticed about Reach is the fact that the technology is somehow vastly more futuristic appearing than what's seen in the previous games. Nitpicking, but it is slightly annoying.
Like what? The DMR is worse than the BR and the new assault rifle is a older model of the Halo 3 one.
There are no advancements in tech (infact the tech in worse because bungie said the army isnt as well off as the marines) in Halo Reach its all just asthetic and gameplay changes no canon changes.

I'm interested in whether this is because they were better written or because more "cool" shit happened in the Nylund ones. I am led to believe the general public are easily confused like this.
Halo seems like a good game, but the community sucks.
(Then don't go on Bungie.net, they are largely SP games after all, and IMHO best played multiplayer in splitscreen)

I had trouble following the innie characters in Cole Protocol, I never could remember which was which and who died.
Then again my favorite scifi book is Pushing Ice so make what you wish of that.
Well, Halo has always been weak on characters. We're talking about the game that has Master Chief as the main character here. Not because Nylund excels at that at all, I mean god knows who Linda and Frank and whatever are by now, I can't remember. Heck the only name I really remember from the books is Jenkins, and that wasn't even from the books.
But heh, if you want clusterfuck you should try reading something by Peter F. Hamilton. The Commonwealth saga has like 40 main characters, not to speak of nights dawn which I am told exceeds 60.
[editline]02:13PM[/editline]
But again, the games did have a colourful cast of memorable characters. So I don't know.
I've read the first book, it is about the battle of Reach, I couldn't get into it. It was kind of poorly written and not engaging at all. But this could because I have the german version.
Halo is becoming what Call of Duty is now.
Same stuff, different weapon, different map.
I really hope Reach has a good campaign. I thought ODST had a cool campaign because it was different, something new. Reach sounds like it'll have a newish campaign, because instead of fighting alongside Marines, you're (hopefully) fighting alongside other Spartans.
You are, but you are also fighting alongside the UNSC Army, and the invading Covenant force is probably going to be hella harder than any we've seen before. Especially on Legendary.
[editline]10:21AM[/editline]
god damn bungie needs to include a mythic difficulty
I think that Mythic is Legendary with all skulls on.
It is, but a dedicated Mythic difficulty would make everything so much more fun.
I have a hard enough time on Heroic. But playing Cortana on a Mythic difficulty? :ohdear:
I have a hard enough time on Heroic. But playing Cortana on a Mythic difficulty? :ohdear:
I hate that level on normal. On a Mythic difficulty? :smithicide:
I beat halo 3 on legendary
one of the hardest videogames ever

I did too, but on co-op.

who wants to play matchmaking
I hate that level on normal. On a Mythic difficulty? :smithicide:
Cortana on SLASO. We're all fucked
I beat halo 3 on legendary

I didn't find it that hard (I've played it with a friend though).
I died at least 30 times on normal when you get Cortana then have to blow up the generator thingies. And I still was faster than I was on easy.
True men beat Cortana on Legendary....by themselves! I swear I've never raged so hard at a game until Cortana

Cortana made you sit in a corner sucking your thumb waiting for a chance to let out a few shots regardless of difficulty
Fuck the flood glad to see them gone
Beat Cortana on Heroic earlier (with co-op). Hit 1020g, but no Security helmet. :saddowns:
Check out what I just bought:

I managed to beat Cortana on Heroic, but one day ill have to come back if I want that damned EOD helmet
IM'A SCARED
I liked Halo 1 and Halo 2. Halo 3 was basically same as Halo 1 and 2, it didn't really have anything new, so I can't say it's bad.
I'm up for some Firefight guys. If anyone wants to play.

Hahaha Halo 3 is nothing on legendary.
Tried the library on legendary?
