Holy crap, I completely forgot about that segment.
he cannot make a horror game without swat or fbi or something
Day Hard. An early HL2 Mod. I had alot of fun playing it, and it's funny.
GoldenEye: Source An remake of the original n64 game Only deathmatch ready, they still working on the campaign http://www.moddb.com/mods/goldeneye-source

GoldSrc Singleplayer: They Hunger is an absolute classic, and a required playthrough for any goldsrc mod fans. Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut is terrifying to the roots, by the maker of Cry of Fear. One of the best. Azure Sheep is a very well-made mod in the HL1 universe that feels like a proper expansion pack. Point of View, like Azure Sheep, feels like a proper DLC and puts you into the position of a Vortigaunt slave. PARANOIA is a Russian horror mod that I've yet to play, yet it always gets raving reviews. Poke646 is a pre-HL2 "sequel" to Half-Life, and is fairly well-made and fun to play. Nothing exceptional, but a good mod nonetheless. Source Singleplayer: Coastline to Atmosphere is a well-made level for HL2, worth a playthrough. Human Error is a fully voice-acted mod where you play as Civil Protection, and has plenty of gizmos and story progression to be enjoyable. Black Mesa is duh MINERVA: Metastasis is the quintessential HL2 mod and you need to play it now. The creator was hired by Valve for his work. Top-of-the-line level design and story. Estranged is a neat-looking HL2 mod that I have yet to get around to playing, but might as well give it a shot, it's gotten good reviews. UnderHell is a terrifying, well-made mod with a definite air of creepiness. Good to play through. Grey is a scary-looking mod that I haven't played yet, but it's stamped with professional style and looks excellent. Half-Life 2: Dawn is a well-paced map series that follows the airboat theme, and is definitely fun for a gameplay flashback to HL2. Rock 24 is a well-made mod that places you in a Combine prison, and tasks you to escape. Dissolution is a pretty ugly mod, and it's almost solely hunt-the-key, but it's still enjoyable. 1187 is fairly well-made, some optimization issues and bad gameplay sections, but not as terrible as it's made out to be. Source Multiplayer: oh fuck where to start Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II is a team-based deathmatch/objective game split between three factions. Gameplay is nuanced, and incredibly addicting. No More Room in Hell is a group-based zombie survival/objective game where players have to work together to push through a level clogged with slow-moving masses of zombies, very well-made. Fistful of Frags is an old-western-styled shooting mod, with various differing gametypes. Zombie Panic: Source is the typical zombie mod - survivors fight against growing hordes of player-controlled zombies until they either escape or get eaten alive. Suicide Survival is a little joke mod that's quite fun to play with friends - it pitches old air force pilots against suicidal shrubberies in an arena filled with fake shrubberies. Fun to mess with. NEOTOKYO is a very, very well-made mod with quality texturing and modeling and fantastic gunplay. It's somewhat plagued by pros, like many mods, but it's worth it just to look at the production value. Hidden: Source pits a team of armed agents versus a single invisible dude with a knife. Adrenaline pumping with a high skill curve, Hidden is hugely popular and well worth playing. GoldenEye Source is a remake of GoldenEye 64 on the Source engine, and it stays as true to the original as possible. Highly recommended. Modular Combat is similar to HL2DM, but it adds in a system of points that allows you to upgrade and tweak your character to fight against various enemy AI. Obsidian Conflict and Synergy both allow online play of HL2's campaign and other maps. I prefer OC, but it's up to you. Not much else to these. Fortress Forever is a Source remake of Team Fortress Classic. It's fun to try out, and can be pretty addicting once you get the hang of it. Firearms: Source is pretty much lots and lots of guns, shoot eachother. Well-made but fairly stale. there's so many dude I can't even start listing them. Other people have mentioned Flesh and Post Script and others, I can't really build this entire thing from memory so here's just a fuckton of suggestions, rip through 'em.
STRIDER MOUNTAIN.
Human Error is a good mod. They just need a waaaaaaay better modeler. God.
thats a joke right
Black Mesa is duh as in "duh go fucking play it right now it's a necessity" I, personally, liked Coastline to Atmosphere. Gotta consider how old it is. 1187 wasn't that terrible, in my opinion. Character was irritating and the gameplay could've been polished more, but it played well enough for me and I managed to enjoy it. It's not "really good," but it's better than most typical HL2 mods. For example, Strider Mountain I despised. Very boring gameplay, uninteresting visually, etc. 1187 at least had some unique stuff, even if it was pretty hamfisted.
What are some good mods not heavily focused on combat?
What are some good mods not heavily focused on combat?
Research and Development is a must
What are some good mods not heavily focused on combat?
If you're into more ~artistic~ games like Dear Esther, you'll probably like Quietus, Post Script, Nestlings, Radiator, The Stanley Parable, and hell, the original Dear Esther mod. If you want puzzles, look into Research and Development (as said above), Too Many Crates, and Water. Flipside's an oldie, but still pretty neat. More into stealth or horror narratives? Black Snow, Flesh, Korsakovia, etc. A great HL1 puzzle mod is the Halfquake series, mostly Halfquake Sunrise.

We are going on circles again I think: Peaces Likes Us Timeline The Gate Half-Life: Invasion Project Quantum Leap (is more for the random maps than another thing). USS Darkstar Natural Selection Half-Life Rally Counter-Strike (there are some good maps that sadly didn´t reached 1.6).
Somewhat tangential question, but relevant: How do you get some of these mods working? Human Error, The Citizen and Rock 24 (and several others) have all been broken for me. The error's caused by the steampipe update, and can be remedied in some cases by changing the contents of gameinfo.txt to work with the VPK format, but if the mod contains any scenes (like getting off the floor, scripted sequences or some cases of custom dialogue) they won't play, often making the mod unplayable.

I glanced over images on some of the lower-rated ones, and if they had shit design, I dropped 'em. If only like 10 people had rated and it had no good reviews, I dropped them too. I left out several 8-grade mods because they looked like shit and had only 5-6 reviews. For HL1, I can personally vouch for the quality of Point of View, Azure Sheep, Life's End, They Hunger, Poke646, Poke646 Vendetta, Half-Life Decay, the Halfquake series, and the first three horror mods. For HL2, I can vouch for how the quality of MINERVA, Mission Improbable, Estranged, Titan XCIX, Human Error, DayHard, Get a Life, Joutomaa, Random Quest, 1187, The Citizen pts I and II, Dino D-Day, Project 25, Half-Life 2: Calamity, Slums 2, Coastline to Atmosphere, Strider Mountain, Dissolution, Research & Development, CURSE, FLIPSIDE, The Stanley Parable, Radiator, Dear Esther, Quietus, Comatose, Attempt to Survive, Post Script, Nightmare House 2, UnderHell, Black Snow, Korsakovia, and Flesh. I've played all of those. Some are hidden gems and should be rated higher, notably Comatose, Random Quest, and and some should be rated much much lower, like Nightmare House 2.
Scientist Slaughter House (and to a lesser extent the mod messup remix some other guy made from it), Sweet Half-Life, Peaces Like Us, Half-life: Invasion! (to get subtitles working you'll have to rename the text file for english subtitles to be the french file, since the mod uses the french one by default and you can't change that in game in the steam version of half-life), Heart of Evil, Chemical Existence (bit of a mixed bag with this one), P.O.V., Azure Sheep, Poke646 1 & 2, USS Darkstar, They Hunger 1-3, The Xeno Project1&2, Todesangst 1&2, Half-Life Chronicles (I don't even remember what this was like but I think it was good??), Afraid of Monsters director's cut, Absolute Redemption, Cry of Fear, Half-Life Halloween, Edge of Darkness, Case Closed, Half-Quake series, and ETC 1&2. Should pretty much cover it as far as the best singleplayer Half-life 1 mods go. EDIT: OOPS forgot about Paranoia. Most should be here: http://www.fileplanet.com/32321/0/section/Gameplay Any that are missing you're on your own with finding. I hear there's an HD version of Heart of Evil, idk if I'd bother with it tbh, it's a fan made deal. You'll need to skip the intro level or two to get heart of evil to work though due to broken AI at the start.
And courtesy of postal here's an old thread to give you pictures with that thread he made way back in 08
Oh shit I forgot Riot Act, that's a great stock HL2 one, too.
i really shouldnt need to aim for the bullets to hit an enemy at point blank [editline]16th July 2013[/editline] like the bullets hit the wall behind him
Blame the creators of GoldenEye 64. That's how it was in that game, so that's how it is in GE:S.
Poke646 was good enough. Had decent additions to the gameplay and the ending kept me interested enough to want to play it's sequel. Just wish my pistol and smg weren't replaced by nail gun skins for the entire friggen' game. EDIT: And I just went through Poke646: Vendetta. Didn't expect it to be so short, but it was definitely well done, a step up from the first.
Blame the creators of GoldenEye 64. That's how it was in that game, so that's how it is in GE:S.
thats a dumb reason for bullets to go through a person
The Great Eccentric Tomorrow - Total conversion, humor emphasis. (8.2)
That sounds interesting, but I can't find it. Are you sure you're not thinking of "The Great Forever Tomorrow"? That was definitely a surreal mod.
-mods-
That list. Some awesome mods there, but also some mods I've never heard about. I downloaded XCIX and I do not regret it. I am gonna try some others now.
