silent storm is almost the perfect tbs for me. The engine was so advanced for his time. But it needs a RAM patch that doesn't disables some of the graphics
Do you happen to be talking about reflections? I reinstalled S3 just a couple of days ago on my Win7 x64 machine and I noticed that those fucking awesome googles I always pick aren't reflective, haven't found any solution to that.
from what i played the combat in jagged alliance seemed the most refined for a tbs, glad xenonauts has taken features from it like being able to put more ap into a shot

Pff, at first I thought it was Hammer & Sickle.

S2 and S3 was better than H&S either way. H&S was at first intended to be a mod for S3 (and it wasn't made by Nival either) so it's criminally short.

I see, well, I can't complain, I got H&S for 2€ in a bargain bin :v:
This thread is making me play x-com again.
Thanks for giving me ton of awesome nostalgia guys.
No problem pal.
I really liked Silent Storm but I did not quite enjoy the story. To much sci-fi and all that jazz.
Silent Storm is great, but I never really liked the idea of the Panzerkleins, so I got a mod to remove them. It makes some parts easier but whatever.
Who cares about the story when you can headshot 2 nazi soldiers with a single shot through a solid wall.
If I were to try the X-Com series, which game should I try first?
If I were to try the X-Com series, which game should I try first?
Enemy Unknown.
Terror from the Deep is a reskin that's much more difficult and IMO confusing.
Apocalypse is just...not the same thing.
Will it work fine on windows 7?
Also it looks a little demanding at 4mb RAM requirements. :v:

If you but X-Com Collection on Steam then it'll work on Win7 perfectly.

Can I just buy UFO Defense separately?
You can, but if you plan on playing the other ones just buy the complete pack. Because Terror from The Deep is decent and Apocalpyse is also great.
But it's your choice buddy.

Only 5$/€

I personally never really liked Apoc or TFTD so I understand why he wouldn't want to buy either of them.

It's just that I'd rather try it before I commit to buying the rest of the series.
TFTD is UFO under water. With Lobstermen of Doom™.
Apocalypse is the same formula, but with lots of bells and whistles added.
Dont know why pepole dont like x-com Apoc. I personally fucking love it and have 146 hours of it on steam.

Yeah I love apoc alot too, the equipment is pretty cool and the destruction was the best of the series.
I just remembered the free game that actually got me interested in X-Com!

Besides the aliens felt really creepy and totally strange. The graphics really look odd but overall I was really interested in researching all the weird alien stuff. The different maps for each building was also great. Furthermore the Alien world is really cool.
My major gripe with Apocalypse was that the humans looked so... odd and the armor looked like the most uncomfortable shit ever!
i decided to reinstall ja2 for some tbs action but keep getting owned on the first mission :(
Ah, JA2 Multiplayer is damn good fun. I might have to get that again. :)
Ontopic of X-Com, I've played X-Com since I was around 7 on the PSOne. (Yeah my parents didn't care really and I always played whilst my brother gave me a hand so it's not like I used to play alone.)
And now 13 years later I'm still playing it, but on PC as my PSOne broke. I've lost count of how many times I've completed this game.

i JUST told a bunch of my buddies who were getting in to ja2 about all of my war stories
one of them involves magic wearing an EOD suit (FOR SIMULATION) to defuse a bunch of mines for the rest of my group to infiltrate an enemy-occupied sam site at night time. reaper was with him doing guard duty. i had reaps stalking this patrol. meanwhile, magic, carrying nothing except for this over-cumbersome EOD outfit, an m9 and defusal kit was working his way southwest to defuse the mines and pack them away in to rucksacks to be carried back later for mad money
well, anyways, long story short magic ended up getting caught and he and reaper, reaper with an M14 and magic with his pistol (and later a mossberg 500 stolen from a baddie's corpse) managed to take out the entire response group and patrols while ex-filtrating back to their exit
WAS AMAZING SHIT DOGE
[editline]19th December 2011[/editline]
also magic got shot about 20 times and never got wounded. just winded. that's why it was such a pain in the butt for him to get out of the heat. i ended up having him ditch all of the EOD pieces except for the center-mass armor and helmet so he could move quicker. try explaining that to your merc buddies when you return to camp without your pants

also this is with 1.13 unnoficial patch + various other mods
word of advice: if you're playing JA2, get 1.13 and some mods. 1.13's new inventory alone makes it worth it and that doesn't include the plethora of other amazing things added in too like improved line of sight etc
I think my main gripe with X-Com apoc was how it was always highly encouraged to go real time as opposed to turn based, particularly if you're planning on fighting Brainsuckers.
Man fuck those little guys

Yes reflections, shadows and lighting in general are gone with the patch. the only other solution is to restore the original exe and use msconfig to lower the ram under 4gb.

Well, that's a bummer :/
Fortunately, blowing up military installments doesn't get any less fun even without shadows and reflections.
On my current run I'm doing a sneaky solo Sniper run, on 2.0 (hard) difficulty. I was quite surprised that AI doesn't cheat and if you shoot someone while being stealthed and the enemy can't see you, they will not be able to find you.
Goddamnit I never finished JA1 because I can't find the dude's hot daughter and shit, and I end up running out of cashmoney.
