Squadmates don't shoot at the human reaper, so his inferno ammo doesn't help there. You can use their powers on it, but they don't shoot at the eye(s).
On the final part of the suicide mission, you face only 2-3 husks/abominations, so the shotgun is useless. The only weapon he really has that works against Collectors on higher levels is his concussive shot if you upgrade it a bunch.
Garrus can carry the Incisor sniper rifle which doesn't suffer from a squad damage reduction. All other weapons suffer something like a 50 percent damage reduction, they do half as much damage as you. The Incisor doesn't suffer from this so Garrus can put a lot of hurt downrange with it. His armor piercing ammo is fantastic and the concussive shot is a nice bonus.
So yeah, taking Garrus was smart, but not Grunt, who is best off fighting blood pack cronies.

I use that combination often as well. Mordin can actually have extremely high shields, I remember him having only 5 or so less shield points than my fully upgraded Shepard in Kestrel armor.
