Stand in the opening at the door where you came in. Have the squaddies stand on the stairs and draw the krogan in one after one. Easy kills and the door closes so you don't have to worry about the mech
But then I have to deal with Krogans at close range, and I'm an Infiltrator.
I eventually gave up on shooting the mech and just shot Jedore in the face enough times. Made sure I Incinerated her to finish off too, just so she suffered.

There is most certainly such thing as better, but you must first define what you want to know what they are best at and what qualities must be measured to find this.
What species is the greatest contributor to science? Does the Salarian speed of learning outweigh their short life span? Does the Asari long life give more time for research and overall greater results? Does the Human diversity and spontaneity give better experiments and overall better ideas or is it just unfocused rubbish?
You could say they each have their own benefits, but that would not answer anything. To be close, to examine each different trait well enough to discern what contributes more is a vital skill.

Equal in what way? There are far too many incomparable factors to say it evens out. Would you say a Salarian and a Krogan are equal in their fighting capacity? Are the Hanar just as industrious as the Geth?
With so many differences in the species, you must pick who is best for each scenario. They may be significantly better at one thing but fail miserably at another task, it all depends on what you require of them. Equal in their own ways and better in their own ways too. If you want to structure a scenario specifically designed so that the Salarian wins then you probably could but you'd almost certainly have to bias it in the Salarian's favour as they have no natural combat skills that could beat a Krogan. Even their stealth counts for almost nothing when with complete organ redundancy and the ability to use weapons even in blood rage, you would need big guns and lots of them.
