Maybe you should get a computer created after the discovery of gravity.
You guys are assholes. It's not like he brought the game knowing that his PC won't run it. Imagine you are buying a game that your PC can barely run, and then, suddently, the game becomes unplayable because developers updated it.
so because some people still have shitty rig, fuck updates what improve the game.

Then maybe he should of bought a DECENT PC to start with.

You buy something - it works. The creator then breaks it.
Updates can be done in way which doesn't break the game for some people. For example, there might be an option to download the original engine. It wouldn't be effortless for Valve, but it's not like there aren't any solutions.
I am not saying that it's illegal step by valve or anything, but it's not his fault that he doesn't have a decent PC.
I actually prefer honest people who have shit PC because they can't get a better one over kids who get everything bought by parents in top notch quality, and often don't care about it at all.
OP, buy a Mac.

If he had read the minimum requirements he'd of seen that his GPU wasn't supported, and if it was supported the update would work fine.
Hey, I have almost that exact same rig! And my computer is a VIAO from 2001!
Seriously, get a new computer. Your mobo probably doesn't even support newer hardware. My VIAO can barely run Source.
Yeah, I had the same problem.
[sp]When I had a shitty computer[/sp]
Get a new computer, there's no other way to fix the problem.
Unless you can replace the graphics card, which I highly doubt is possible for a computer THAT old.
oh yeah by the way my computer cant run portal or TF2 because it gives me a error say i need pixel shader to run it
Stop giving us more reasons to tell you to:
GET A NEW COMPUTER.
God damn.
get a PCI 8400GS. They're cheap and play source games decently

Or you know, some of us who have full/part time jobs and save up for a machine.

Your computer is old. It's funny to me.
nope, just tried it and just got a blue screen of death
Forgot that shit existed.
i can play source engine 7 fine without any B.S.O.D. and i use 3d analyze to make the game to look like i have a modern graphics card, but my specs are
OS:Microsoft Windows Xp Professional (5.1 Build 2600)

It's THAT bad.
It's possible to play HL2 on the old engine.

Though you really should consider getting a new computer.

Thanks for including me in your picture. :3:
Here's some sort of crappy tutorial on how to get HL2 to run on your piece of shit:
Needed software: Half-Life 2, GCFScape (Google it).
1) Go into the Steam folder, then go in to steamapps, then SourceMods.
2) Create a folder inside the SourceMods folder titled "hl2_oldengine"
3) Open up notepad, copy and paste the following in to it:
"GameInfo"
{
game "Half-Life 2 Old Engine"
title "HALF-LIFE"
name "Half-Life 2 Old Engine"
type singleplayer_only
FileSystem
{
SteamAppId 215 // This will mount all the GCFs we need (240=CS:S, 220=HL2).
ToolsAppId 211 // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug, materials\editor, etc.
SearchPaths
{
Game |gameinfo_path|.
Game hl2
Game Sourcetest
}
}
}
4) Save it as "gameinfo" and save it to the hl2_oldengine folder you created.
5) Open up GCFScape, then press File > open, go into steam apps, find the file called "half-life 2 content" and open it.
6) Go into the HL2 folder, Right click the folder that says "maps", press extract, then find the hl2_oldengine folder you made, then press ok, repeat this for the "scenes" folder.
7) Restart steam, you should see a new mod called "Half-Life 2 Old Engine", run this.
8) Enable the console, then open the console and use the command "map d1_trainstation_01" to get it started.
9) Buy a new PC.
Some things to note:
-You can't start the game via the "New Game" option, hence Step 8. There's probably a file in one of the GCFs that would fix this, but I can't find it.
-Weapons will be listed as "#HL2_Crowbar" "#HL2_Pistol" and such, there's probably a file in one of the GCFs that fix this too, but I couldn't find that one either.
-The mounted turrets do fuck all. Oh well.

Thanks for the hilarious mental image of someone literally playing HL2 on a pile of shit.

No, just no. Get a 8800GTS 512mb G92, DX10 and run source games perfectly.

I don't think his 10 year old motherboard has a PCI-E port.
I would just like to point out that updates can be disabled.
[editline]08:42PM[/editline]
If you've still got the original cds/dvd, just reinstall it and once you open up steam, disable updating.

I see your point, Ive run half-life 2 low settings on a 32mb ATI Rage

It's not Valve's obligation to make sure every single user can still run their games after an update. What IS their obligation is to make sure the bulk of the users can still use it. There will always be outliers such as the OP.
Does it suck that something you once bought can no longer be used? Yeah a little bit, but it's not the end of the world. Your game is forever tied to your Steam account. If you just get a new computer, your games will still be with you. It's not like Valve is making you throw out your old games because your PC is old. :colbert:
