Yeah, you are - after you get to the first town you can use the waypoint portal to port to the mapworks.

Nice patch, but I start to wonder when will SDK come out.
Bump for Steam Sale
Should I get this? The only reason I'm hesitant is because the big draw for Diablo for me was more or less the atmosphere and "story" (well it was story-lite, but the world and characters had a good development), and the raw viceral gameplay was what solidifed it for me.
This seems like it "technically" is a better game than Diablo, but I get the feeling that the atmosphere/story elements are practically non-existant, plus I can't take a cartoony texture/model style too seriously (though there are some awesome looking texture mods coming out). Not to mention, because its so far past release, I won't actually play it co-op with anyone, it'll be a totally solo experience (much like how I played Diabo 2 lol).
How does it progress? Did you guys get the feeling that the game lacked any real atmosphere to it and/or were you able to be drawn in?
I feel like I should just wait for Path of Exile since that seems to nail the atmosphere quite well.
Do it, it's great, huge improvement over first game. And if you have somebody to play with, it is ieven better. The graphics are amazing, they have their own style and aren't 'cartoony'. There is no single thing I disliked about TL2, maybe only that I don't have enough time to play more.
Personally I'd say it was worth every penny. I find it to be a good Diablo 3. Unique art style, monumental re-playability. Generally great fun and easy to learn and grasp. At-least for me. I usually suck badly at the whole skill tree thing and char stat points usually but I was able to pick it up pretty easily.
Got my 44 Berserker and 23 Engie and loving it, still intend to get level 100's of all 4 classes. Then farm for the gear sets for all Orange.
Alright sorry for the bump.
I've been playing this for a while now, started off with an Engineer and out of curiosity started playing as an Embermage.
Magma Spear is probably my favorite spam spell ever so far. Nothing so far comes close when it comes to mowing down groups of enemies like an ultimate badass.

That said I abso-fucking-lutely-love fighting nether enemies, something about watching them explode into purple bits is just feels so...Good.
I really dont like what they did to transmuting gems... I loved stacking up loads of gems in order to make them a higher tier, now i just waste them all by making shitty-for-all-but-dual-wield gems... Also, I dislike how the standard gems now give you elemental resistance rather than stats when socketed in armor and trinkets.
Siege Guardian and a War Titan at once. Fun stuff.

I know the sale is over but I guess I might as well respond anyway. There'll be another sale by the end of the month if you didn't already buy the game.
The storyline is probably the last thing I would recommend TL2 for. It pretty much feels like an afterthought, tacked on as an excuse to keep you moving on to various exotic new environments, and fighting whatever random enemies they came up with.
The technical aspects of the game really are a much bigger draw. I especially love how they handled the skill tree, compared to what Diablo 3 does.
If you already know about that, skip this paragraph. But what they did was make it so that you don't need points in the earlier skills of a skill tree in order to put points in the higher-tier skills. You just need to be a high enough level. And unlike Diablo 2 where you're pretty much forced to minmax if you want to survive, TL2 forces you to diversify your skills. Like, you unlock a new skill tier at level 42, but if you immediately put a point into that skill, you can't put another one in until level 45 or something. But since you're still getting a new skill point every level, you have to spread the points around and use multiple skills.
Bought 2 unidentifieds, both lovescratches. They're level 30, and I'm level 25. Yes.

Sadly this wasn't even half of it. It didn't render all the names for drops and there was more up the stairs with another pile of bodies.
Saying that this is what it looks like without ANY loot names.

All those bodies are Champions.....
Still helped me add a nice chunk of things to my Socket gem and Unique collection.

How long before this game picks up? Because I'm starting to think I just don't like this genre as much as I used to.

If you didn't like Diablo 1/2 then you probably won't enjoy this game very much.

Got to admit though the story is kinda meh. Once that's done with and you get to mapworks, then the game is even better. I run my TL2 with Synergies mod. Makes the game a million times better.
One character I've been playing for about 12-15 hrs and I haven't even finished act 2.

I wasn't a fan of Synergies. It made veteran impossible for my embermage.
One character I've been playing for about 12-15 hrs and I haven't even finished act 2.
I personally got half way through Act 1, heard about how the acts after were a lot less hand holding. And blazed through to act 3. Then read about Mapworks and blazed through again straight to the MW.
I wasn't a fan of Synergies. It made veteran impossible for my embermage.
It can make the game somewhat frustrating. Although my Zerker seems to do pretty well providing I'm being attacked by a HUGE mob. If I get attacked by like 1 champion and a few general mobs I get killed, but if there's say 2 champions, a few elite's, and a largish handful of random mobs I tear through em and the crits keep my health maxed.
Although Embermage I got to level 23 and stopped playing to max out my zerk, which is still a WIP, saying that my Engie is still 27. Regardless I always find the Magic based characters harder to play.
If you didn't like Diablo 1/2 then you probably won't enjoy this game very much.
I liked Diablo 1 and 2. Maybe I just went in with low expectations because I didn't like TL1.
I liked Diablo 1 and 2. Maybe I just went in with low expectations because I didn't like TL1.
Once ya get a bit further into the game it gets a bit less tedious, the first act and maybe the first little bit of act 2 can be somewhat boring, after that it tends to open up. At-least for me anyway.
As I said though I essentially blitzed my way through to the Mapworks.
I need to get some friends to play Torchlight 2 so I can actually play together with someone. Playing with random guys on the internet isn't very fun in my experience, especially not in a game like TL2.

Agreed. I found playing with friends a lot more fun. Plus randoms online seem to hack on occasion. Luckily I keep my char save files backed up. One server I joined automatically jumped me to level 100.
So just recently picked up the game and was wondering what you guys think the best tree for the embermage is? I've put some in fire and some in ice and they both seem good but I don't know which tree I should go down. Playing with 3 others on veteran.

Well, I picked several spells and passives from all three of them and tried to level them up as much as possible.
But I'd suggest you to pick something different. You can learn a spell and see if you like it, if not you can unlearn it (as long as you have the gold for it).
I got Torchlight 1 it's pretty awesome although it lacks the multiplayer from 2 that I desperately want.
Did they release the SDK and open this up for modding?

You mean for Torchlight 2? Yes they did, months ago.
It's all here if you wanted to see it: http://www.torchlight2game.com/news/2013/04/01/guts/
I had already made a new thread when the post count was 1000, that's for TL2 too. It'd be better to continue posting there.

Thanks! I've been out of the loop on gaming due to my PC being broken. Just got it fixed last night and was just perusing the forums about games I want to get back into, so figured I would ask about the MOD status.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I'll go there to post moving forward.
Bought Torchlight 2 with items that I sold during the sale. So I payed nothing for it.
I really liked Torchlight 1 but I got bored after a while because it was repetitive. Torchlight 2 is fucking brilliant, they improved a lot of stuff and it's just such an enjoyable game. Glad I bought it.
Just wait until Act 2.
Well, it sure has more variation in skills and such. I like the engineer so far, although I wished he had some abilities that would boost the use of shotgonnes, they are awesome.
