It's likely some type of symbol for commanders of squads. Sort of like how in the Apollo missions, the commanders would wear red stripes(similar thing in Mass Effect).
Played through Tip of the Spear yesterday for fun. The vehicles fighting off-map are pretty impressive if you stop to watch them.
That level was a huge wasted opportunity imo, it look promising with a whole battalion of UNSC versus Covenant, but somehow they all get lost and it ends up with Noble Six and Kat fighting a few ground troops and blowing up some AA guns. Could've been way better.
Yeah, would've been epic if it had some giant vehicle battle, like the one on The Covenant from H3.

Yeah, even a short scripted gunner sequence during the driving part at the begining, with your co-op buddies in the side seat, or in another hog, and THEN you go crashing over the bridge.

Some playlists that usually last around a week, mostly firefight gametypes. The ones these week are utter chaos, like fistfight, nadefight, rocketfight etc...
