also i like how in the b/w pokedex it tells you if you have seen a shiny form of something

Basically, they're as legit as you want them to be. You can set up one of those servers yourself, too.
What it does is load a .pkm file (a file containing all data on a pokémon in your savefile, with things like it's gender, stats, awarded ribbons, etc). People connecting to your server will then receive a copy of that .pkm file. So if you loaded a hacked pokémon, it's not legit (though personally, I don't give much of a fuck). If you loaded a legit pokémon, then the received version will also be legit.
