Valve is probably going to go the L4D way with matchmaking, have a ton of official servers and then custom ones.

how does a dedicated server make sense for a game that will only have 2 person multiplayer?

They both use matchmaking and dedicated servers.
Having dedicated servers makes no sense for a game where only two people will be connected at a time.
1. They're delaying Portal 2
2. They're delaying the DLC for Left 4 Dead
3. They actually released Episode 3 back in 2008. They just forgot to tell people and nobody ever noticed it.
I always thought it'd be awesome if they released it on Steam a day before it's supposed to be without any fanfar, and that the absent minded person could buy it before the date, and then tell everyone.

It should be In-game dedicated, like L4D so you wont have trouble making a server off your computer.
