1 GB of ram is stretching it, if they spread out, and are more than 20, say 25 or 30 it will eat alot more ram, not to mention the memory leaks that happen, my server sometimes consume 350 mb ram on idle.

Well I was fine with just 1 GB. Just had to restart the server every 12 hours and it would run fine with 10 - 20 people for a good amount of time.

You can get a powered minecart to push a regular minecart and make a train. That solves your walking problem.
