Do you start out in a different place depending on race?
Yes.
Am I the only one who thinks this game is strangely similar to FlyFF? (although a ton better)
What. I can't even think of any similarities. Unless this was a joke, that is.
Wait, you can be different races besides Human? Their website is misleading..

You can be human, elf, or dwarf. Each race has two or three different origins. There's
Human noble, human magi.
City elf, Dalish elf, Elf magi.
Dwarf commoner, Dwarf noble, but no dwarf magi.
Each race can be a warrior or rogue, but only humans and elves can be mages. Something about dwarfs having a strong resistance to magic.

I thought dwarfs couldn't be mages because they don't dream.

Not sure, the manual and character creation screen say
The dwarves are a race in decline, as each new day of a centuries-old war against the darkspawn consumes both dwarven lives and the scant remaining territory of their underground kingdom. Dwarves have an innate resistance to magic, preventing them from becoming mages.
I like them not dreaming causing them to be unable to be a mage. :colbert:
How do I move all the members of my party in WASD mode? I don't like using point-and-click mode and when I use WASD the other people just get left behind.

In the East Brecilian Forest, does killing the[sp]mad Hermit[/sp]actually give you anything worthwhile?

A book (you'll receive a codex), an Ancient elven helmet and the acorn you need for the quest.
But you can trade it with him without killing him, you'll need a ring you find in the ruin behind him, a book of songs that you find in the dalish camp(the armor box behind the chick that tells you're a thief) and a scarf you use to get from the woman that turns into a werewolf)

I forgot that I got that scarf from that dead woman. Damn, now I feel kinda bad for giving it to the hermit. I got the acorn and I gave it to the tree, but I walked just 5 meters and 2 trees attacked me. Didn't the elder tree say that the trees wouldn't attack me any more?
EDIT:
Also, I've equipped the branch staff to Morrigan and it made no difference.
It seems that once a mage runs out of mana he's fucked, making long battles incredibly hard without tons of lyrium potions
Mages are powerful and Bioware confirmed this, but they don't want to change it. (And it's fine actually)
And one of the reasons they are powerful is because the enemy AI isn't smart enough to take down your mage first. (That's the first thing I do when I meet an enemy group with a mage in it.)

I'm a mage and usually die first because i do so much damage compared to the rest of the team that they all go after me first, despite my warriors have threaten etc
I played a mage I never really had much of a problem dying. No matter what kind of mage you play, it's good to have winter blast. Incredibly useful for slowing down foes that break away from the tank and come at you.

Shapeshifting is good for this because shapeshifting requires virtually no mana to use, you only need to reserve mana for it (which only takes from the max mana you can have while the ability is activated)
Of course it's only useful if you have a shapeshifting mod installed, because the default shapeshiting forms blow ass. Nothing like being attacked, ran out of mana, then shape shifting into a werewolf to tear some shit up.
I find blizzard to be one of the most useful spells there is, It freezes everyone except possibly boss enemies as they have higher resistances w/e, then does damage over time.
By the time most enemies unfreeze they lost about 1/3-1/2 of their health depending on casters spellpower and enemy strength etc.
The best part is that if there are enemies behind say a door, you can cast the spell JUST outside the door, so that even though you never even saw the enemies, half the area of effect will be in the room.
Then, every enemy will start running towards you, so even if they where outside the area of effect, they will still run into it and get frozen/raped.
Most enemies unfreeze about half way through the duration of the spell but clever use of Cone of Cold can keep them inside the area of effect longer.
Now combine the freezing effect with other area of effect spells like tempest for example, and you could theoretically play through most of the game solo.
I've been trying to do it solo on nightmare using some custom made armor and weapons. With a mage I mean. Gotta love the forge mod.

Mass paralysis and earthquake are pretty sweet too, If you've got all three of those hitting one spot everyone in that circle is fucked.
Game is fucking awesome.

Best game ever. Just finished it as a Human Warrior.

[sp]If you get high enough approval with Morrigan, she'll tell you that Flemeth is trying to kill her to steal her body, so you have to kill her. But when she does, she shapeshifts into a dragon, which makes me think why can't Morrigan do that.[/sp]
Anyone notice how bad everyone's teeth is in this game?

Never really meant I dislike their teeth, just saying they don't take very good care of their teeth :v:

The problem with that is you must be able to attack all your enemies when they are clustered and from a distance. You can't use blizzard close to your party because due to friendly fire it will rape them in the ass as well. It's a spell that's pretty much only useful if you have the element of surprise and a decent distance between you and your enemies due to this... Most of the time if the enemy sees you first they will easily run up to you and your party in melee range before you have time to fire off the Blizzard after the 4 second charge time.
