Probably a retarded question, but are dungeons just found underground or what? I've been REALLY, REALLY deep underground and I've not hit any different biomes or anything really special minus there being skellies and mother slimes around. I'm playing on a large map.

Large maps are really large.
Dungeons are found on one of the far ends of the map.
Underground jungles are found on the opposite side of the dungeon, often right above hellworld depth.
Hellworld is found at the very bottom.

Dungeons are found at one end of the map above ground. It's sort of like a castle.

My Documents/My Games/Terraria
I'm in the dark brownish/grey fossil layer, only really see those two enemies, and dark globs as well.
I got lucky early on though, two rings of regen, and a boots of hermes from some chests.
Also managed to get a dynamite at one point, though I haven't found one since.
Using a silver helmet, with iron chest and greaves. gold sword and pickaxe with 200hp.
You guys know what you're supposed to do with gems? I've got a few sapphire, topaz and rubies lying around.
Also, how rich do you have to be to get the merchant to swing by? and do other npcs come to your house as well, or only ones with specific roles? Would be nice for some other npcs to keep the swarms of demon eyes and zombies from falling into my mineshaft.

Gems + Meteorite = Phase Blades.
Phase Blades = Feeling like a Jedi/Sith.
For the Merchant you need 50 Silver coins.

Gems are a good source of income. Instead of selling them, keep them in your inventory and only sell them right before you buy something. That way, it's like having money on you except you don't lose it when you die.

I killed pinky with a copper axe.. saw him at the begining of the game.
Just bought and played for the first time. Pretty impressed thus far.

I found that it got a lot better as I kept playing.
I found Pinky on my friends server. I was scared of it but then I killed it.
edit: How do you see your depth or height meter?
What is the use of mana?
I'm finding it awful hard to find caves worthy of actually being called a cave. I've been through 4 worlds and can't find any.
