For some reason, I don't like it while I'm playing, but when I think about it I like it a lot.
Bloodfuckers. need I say more?
I miss the days where Crysis made one every 3-10 pages. It was fun.
What are a few good mods for it?
try AMK, it'll be harder but your guns will actually hit something
The think that lets STALKER down is the bugs.
I'd say Stalker has reached the game equivalent of "Cult" status in film, it creates an original atmosphere and has unique imagery. It also is one of the best games to illustrate to us an environment that really wants to kill you. And it's distinctly foreign yet wholesomely easy to understand.

Gun fights are actually challenging in STALKER.
It's an acquired taste, most like the atmosphere but dislike the bugs and the clunkiness. But when you get past the bugs and silly AI and other stuff, it gets very awesome. I've had my best gaming moments with Shadow of Chernobyl, it's the best game I've ever played.
It's not supposed to be mainstream. It's a cult game. It has a small but devoted fanbase.
Small? Not in the slightest.
Where's that comparison image between playing videogames and playing STALKER?
I'ts something like Fallout 3 (I don't mean the RPG aspect, but the feel) Game is bad in any aspect - shooting, balance, animations, dialogue, storyline etc. But it's so fun I don't know why! Played it for many, many hours and still have it installed since 2008.
STALKER is a better game than fallout 3 and they're noncomparable anyway.

Dynamic AI makes for some interesting encounters.
I've played a shitload of games in the past but Stalker is one of the few games which I replay regulary. The sheer amount of mods adds to the replayability. The great thing about the games is the atmosphere and the dilapidated sourroundings. It's also often very hilarous because of the random bugs or encounters. It's cheesy at times because of the horrible voice acting and such. But that is what makes Stalker so great.
I love it for the atmosphere and the pseudo-realism it has, long range shots have bullet drop in some form, you can't become a bullet sponge (without abusing artifacts), and you can't really move around like you are nothing, there is some weight to you. Though I have never finished one yet...
