Some info from a reddit post:
WORLD
Seamless world - no zones
The land mass shown was not Antonica, it was just a land mass. I asked if Kelethin existed and he shrugged as if he could not answer. BUT IF THEY HAVE CRUSHBONE (concept art) THEY MUST HAVE KELETHIN RIGHT?!
I asked about the limitations I had read about with the Light Forge engine in regards to water (rivers) and square-ish maps, his response was that it was a heavily modified version so there will be fluids in the game.
No oceans, 'yet'.
There will not be 2 factions (ie alliance/horde), or 2 sides (evil/good).
CHARACTERS
There will be 8 starting classes, the one you pick you basically get for free. The other classes you will be able collect. I am assuming these 8 will be a part of the 40 planned classes (more of which will be shown tomorrow in the classes panel). Their plan is to release new classes as the years progress. It was also mentioned that some classes will be extremely hard to obtain.
No levels - referred to as `tiers', the 'zones' will be tiered with certain level mobs and usually will be higher tiered the deeper you go in that specific area. In order to tier up you will have to complete certain objectives; one example given is say completing a specific set of armor would tier you up.
8 max total abilities at any given time. 4 per weapon, and 4 per class. He mentioned something about all 8 being from weapons if you were say duel wielding, but I may have misunderstood him here.
There is NO XP from mob killing, no grinding, etc etc. Essentially what we're looking at is a set of objectives and how we go about completing those objectives will be up to us. It was said that one may be able to tier up without even having to fight.
RANGERS ARE A CONFIRMED CLASS
Cannot progress both a paladin and a shadow knight at the same time. Basically you have to do bad things to get friendly with the SK people so you can up the SK skills, but you have to do good things to get in nice with the paladin folks to get trained in paladin things. You can however, do bad things and get the SK class, then redeem yourself and get the paladin class, but in doing so you may no longer be able to talk to the SK people and continue your progression with that class.
I asked about death; they cannot talk about death. All he said was "it's cool and we think you'll like it".
ITEMS
All items will be bind on equip (or pickup, not sure). He said that he loved the idea of non-bind weapons but they ruin the economy.
the game will be heavily based on gear, he loves gear and loves the hunt for gear. One example he gave us is say you were a Rogue that wanted to get the wizard's teleport spell - well once you obtain the teleport spell and use it, you most likely would not have enough stamina/mana/whatever to do your backstab, so you would want to gear that class specifically for this task by obtaining a weapon that returned stamina/mana/whatever on teleport.
Crafted items and dropped items (say from raids) will be of equal value many times. This is all dependent on the class, spec, etc though. He basically said there is a big emphasis on crafting and they want their goods to be competitive.
COMBAT
NO AUTO ATTACK, I asked if was similar to NW's combat system and he said it was similar, but more advanced.
The demo shown was more of a `tech demo' for the destructible environment. None of the NPCs were even pathing (the small ones were not even attacking back).
BOWS are in the game (more on that tomorrow apparently).
MISC
I asked if there was a large majority of the game that they were not showing us (maybe due to lack of polish etc etc) and he said yes.
Crafting was compared to SWG, but better
There are currently 70-90 devs (don't remember the exact number) on the dev team for EQN.

Ahh only 8 abilities at one time.. please let that be very customizable otherwise I'll be disappointed :(
Ahh only 8 abilities at one time.. please let that be very customizable otherwise I'll be disappointed :(
The massively article said 4 were weapon skills and 4 were determined by your classes (so I'm thinking those are customizable)
QUOTE:
Combat will consist of four skills and four weapon moves at a time. The weapon moves depend on what weapon you have equipped, and what skills you have at your disposal depends on what classes you have discovered and learned. That's classes plural: You can multi-class indefinitely. And you get to mix and match the skills from the various classes to make a build you like.
Sounds like GW 2 system then.. I don't like that.
Sounds like GW 2 system then.. I don't like that.
There's likely going to be a lot more customisation and variety than GW2. You can learn to become any of the 40 classes and mix between them out of combat, so a warrior with a 2 handed sword and a teleport ability etc.
The classes are 'earned' through various means, the example they gave was to become an assassin you had to be an expert rogue first. Or to be a paladin you would have to have to have made good choices as your character.
Sounds like GW 2 system then.. I don't like that.
I've never played GW2, what was wrong with it?
i completly loved GW2 combat it felt dynamic and useful instead of the typcal " STAY STILL AND SMASH ALL THESE HOTKEYS"
I've never played GW2, what was wrong with it?
Nothing is wrong with it, it just sounds like GW2's system where your first 5 hotkeys are based on the weapons you are holding, the 6th hotkey is your heal skill, and the last 4 hotkeys are mixed and matched out of combat.
One of the only MMO's I'm waiting for next to Wildstar.
I've never played GW2, what was wrong with it?
Nothing really, I just got bored of it really quick. Feels like there's not a lot of depth to it, little customization etc
well GW2 was pretty much a failure wasn't it? So I hope if EQNext takes features from it, it will do a much better job
well GW2 was pretty much a failure wasn't it?
No.
well GW2 was pretty much a failure wasn't it? So I hope if EQNext takes features from it, it will do a much better job
I don't think so, it just didn't revolutionize MMOs in the way everyone hoped (and has been hoping about every MMO since WoW got boring). It definitely made money, people enjoyed it, and people still play.
it just didn't revolutionize MMOs in the way everyone hoped (and has been hoping about every MMO since WoW got boring).
Well thats what I meant by "Failure", it didn't live up to the Hype
I expect EQ Next to revolutionize MMOs. If it just ends up being a WoW or GW clone I wont be happy
I expect EQ Next to revolutionize MMOs. If it just ends up being a WoW or GW clone I wont be happy
Don't expect too hard or you will just fall into the same trap people have with every other new MMO that falls short.

Nothing ever lives up to the hype. Best thing to do is ignore the hype.
well GW2 was pretty much a failure wasn't it? So I hope if EQNext takes features from it, it will do a much better job
The exact opposite. Its been very successful in sales and its playerbase. It didn't live up to the hype train, but it still met with most expectations. However personally I feel it needs a lot of help when it comes to conent updates, but that's an entirely different discussion.
Oh this is pretty cool:

I've been following the development of the VoxelFarm engine for years. It's being developed by one guy. Now it's licensed to SOE and being used as a tool for EverQuest Next.
man imagine if they had it so you can build towns/houses/halls or whatever with guilds and then in PvP someone just comes in and destroys your shit
would be hardcore

Not every game has to be revolutionary. A game is successful if it can make a profit and have a thriving community.
That being said I'm really excited for this game because I was a massive fan of EQ2 and I love sandbox MMOs. I just wish it wasn't SOE making this game. Their F2P model is generally crappy. I still stand by the Guild Wars pay-model.
Well from what was showed to us in the Keynote by SOE, if they implement it well than it is indeed going to be revolutionary
Otherwise, it would be just another MMO and there are many coming out including TESO and FFXIV:ARR and more
I'm sitting on the side of skeptical as fuck. I like what some of the stuff they're saying, but often they oversell these points and basic stuff like combat flow (which looked clunky as fuck to me) goes unsaid. That and its running on planetside 2's engine. so that's a big fucking scare.
So I hear that it's a planned F2P model? Seems good. Every MMO since WoW has tried to do subscription and ended up switching a few months later. Being built from the ground up as F2P seems like it will be better.

Where did you hear that? Because I assumed it would just be subscription based
Where did you hear that? Because I assumed it would just be subscription based
I think it might have been mentioned in one of the articles, but it's almost guaranteed since pretty much all of SOEs games are F2P now.
Edit:
Ah, it says in the FAQ on the official site that it's f2p.

Also, this was a pretty good interview.

Awesome thanks for the info
So I hope this wont be some cheesy pay 2 win cash shop or something
Sometimes I prefer a good game with Subscription
Like FFXIV:ARR is going to be
I'm really hopeful for this, I just hope I can run it. Otherwise it goes on my "games to try after I upgrade" list.

Having it built from the ground up F2P is better for everyone than having Subscription and switching to F2P
Having it built from the ground up F2P is better for everyone than having Subscription and switching to F2P
Absolutely. Too many MMOs try to go subscription-based then when they go F2P they fuck everything up because they have no clue how F2P will affect things.
[editline]3rd August 2013[/editline]
Also, only 8 skills does seem really limiting, but the class system will hopefully help with that.
I just hope they don't go full GW2 and not have ANY tanking or healers, because then it's a zerg-fest. I don't want everybody and their mother to be DPS all the damn time. GW2 removed the holy trinity and didn't have anything to replace it, which created a lot of problems, so I'm hoping that EQN takes a different direction from that.

Overall opinion so far is somewhere around optimistic but not fully hyped. Their statements on combat and skills so far have me a little bit worried.

Overall SOE has been pretty great with F2P. Not as good as LOTRO or RIFT but it's definitely not Pay2Win.
