Found my first deposit of gold ore, found bedrock. Mined into the bottom of the map, jumped in on accident. Fell through, lost a quarter of a stack of gold ore, 3 iron picks, a stack of wood planks and an iron sword. :(

It's a paradox I know, but once you get even one coal you can make torches and light your way to more coal. I deleted my resources trying to fix the gray screen issue, so I have no sound yay. I want to dig a hole straight down to my huge natural cave system I found (and it is HUGE, has some diamond, gold, redstone... haven't hit bedrock yet but I must be close) for a quick exit, but wood seems to be quite scarce (or I'm lazy to go far for trees) and a single ladder seems to take almost an entire log of wood to construct. Is there an easier way?

I wanted to dig a hole like that (not as big) and stick a house over the top for a tower into the void below... but I couldn't get the stupid steps to turn the right direction so I gave up. :v:
