• Too much swearing in games?

I don't mind it. People swear all the time. My entire family swears all the time.
I cant understand , how could people forget:
And If you see Dr Breen , tell him I say : " F*CK you"
Yeah , I never swear
Having characters constantly curse at the drop of a hat isn't very mature. I can accept some cursing when it's needed, *Something explodes suddenly* OH SHIT! or something like that. When it's hurr shit fuck cunt balls all the time, it just sounds stupid and makes me think the writers were trying to appeal to kiddies or retarded fratboys.
Which is where I think a lot of games are going... hence this poll.. Also, I believe that having OPTIONS, not CENSORSHIP is a win/win for everyone. Props to EPIC.
So.. in that mindset, no narrative is impactful or meaningful if they don't drop the f bomb? Same with Half Life 2.. why didn't they include a ton of f bombs? Would it made it more dramatic or emotional?
You're missing his point. Words/statements like the "f bomb" is used for a strong emotion. For example: "OH FUCK, it's going to explode!" "Oh no! It's going to explode!" "OH GOD, I BROKE MY LEGS, SOMEONE HELP!" "I broke my legs"

That is why I use the Half Life example. It's gritty, Mature rated and an "adult" story but it doesn't resort to huge amounts of profanity to be effective.
Sean in the Saboteur dropped the F-bomb a lot, and I wasn't annoyed by it. Had some funny moments as well. "Ve know you are an English spy! tell us what you were going to do!" *Dramatic pause* "Go fuck yourself."
If you ask me, it adds a sense of realism to (some) Games, especially War Games. People aren't going to watch their language and excuse themselves when they curse in a War Zone. "Oh fu-excuse me; I mean, Oh Fudge, I'm shot!"
Right.. but how much more realism do we need in war games to make them "good games"? Soliders get drunk, some rape and abuse, etc etc --- Would that make it more immersive and "better" ? I can't even remember what the first few CODs said during intense moments but I don't think it was "oh fudge" -- Same with Medal of Honor Allied Assault.. very intense.. no f bombs... strange.
Why would you ever want children I don't understand :psyduck:
If any of you have seen Band of Brothers, someone even said that the soldiers don't swear much at all.
I don't know what you're talking about
I don't know what you're talking about
Its a finnish game. F bombs dont count on those
I am not really interested in if you agree with swearing or think "everyone swears so it's cool" but more of the TREND in gaming. COD 1, 2 or 3 didn't have any F bombs.. yet Black Ops has a ton. Battlefield 1942 had no F bombs.. yet Bad Company 2 is loaded with them. Does it really make the game... better?
I think the reason Black Ops had a lot of swearing was because a lot of movies that take place in Vietnam and films from the seventies in that genre had a lot of swearing in them.
People are horny. Want to fuck all the time
Yet we haven't seen a single game involving detailed sex scenes. I though sex sells, but I guess everyone got scared off after GTA:SA's hot coffee.
dude, are you some sort of moralfag or pansy or something? who the fuck cares if people cuss
I love games that bleeps cussings out, it makes it sound more comedical. Brutal legends had a choise between curses or bleeps, wich I found pretty cool.
Yet we haven't seen a single game involving detailed sex scenes. I though sex sells, but I guess everyone got scared off after GTA:SA's hot coffee.
Sex sells in movies. In games sex attracts soccer moms.
If any of you have seen Band of Brothers, someone even said that the soldiers don't swear much at all.
I was reading a book by a World War II veteran a few years ago who mentioned, in passing, that it was impossible for them to have a reunion without everybody dropping multiple f-bombs in the course of the event. My own brief military experience tells me that the three most common world's in a US Army infantryman's language are "fuck," "goddamn," and "bitch." Obviously, a game in a modern warfare setting (cough) that cleans this up doesn't feel as realistic to me. It's the fucking Army, not a goddamn daycare for sissy little bitches. Different war, same timeframe.
Getting an M rating has nothing to do with it having swearing or not. I don't think I've played a single game were the language was the reason alone that a game got an M-rating. The story in HL2 wouldn't have been better or worse if it had FUCK thrown into its dialog, as long as it made sense. Whenever a character casually swears or swears under stress can tell a lot about the character.
I thought they did use the F-word once in HL2, Barney says to Gordon "If you see Dr. Breen, tell him I said FUCK YOU! Look in the GCF, there is audio of him saying it, in Metal Gear Solid 4, the only time I heard it dropped was when Play Girl Lyndall Jarvis goes crazy and exclaims "people hurting, people suffering, isn't it funny, ITS FUCKING HILLARIOUS!" I thought you could say Fuck in Teen rated games, on the PS2 version of LA Rush, Mother Fucker is used only once in the rap song, "Where you gonna go now", but so is that racial slur rappers like to use in a different song. Speaking of racial slur, I hear that one in multiplayer, nothing to do with player's avatar, or skin tone of other player, but more for insulting purposes. Of course, that was then, you used to get away in E rated games with Damn You, and What the hell did you expect. Again, PS2, Gran Turismo 3, and Ape Escape 2. When someone is pissed off, especially in multiplayer, language is forgivable in my book when pissed off for a good reason, but the problem is when one player starts naming another or multiple, then it turns into a war. Mayhem Gaming Online will kick you off their Source server if you get caught saying the F-word. However, doing it for no reason, I don't get the point, but I won't bitch about it.
I loved the swearing in GTA:SA [editline]16th April 2011[/editline] Fuck, shit, motherfucka, etc.
GTA may be the series that uses language the most dirty often in games because they can, in GTA 4, just drive a block through traffic, pedestrians and drivers say stuff left to right, only if you drive recklessly of course. Zovox, SA is great, but the GTA series as a whole has unique lines per game. When you keep bumping into chics in any GTA game, they say lines including, What am I a pervert magnet, only my pimp is allowed to hit me, did he just grab my ass, get the fuck away from me, don't fucking touch me, jeeze my t*ts you asshole, watch the c**t, come back here pussy, you just bumped into the wrong bitch, mind my t*tties and fuck off! Don't know how the men respond if you jump them the same way like that. When they get pissed off and want to punch back about being harassed, the most notable time was when this chic said "I am gonna cut your balls off and shove them down your throat!" (sorry if too extreme but I don't work for Rockstar)
I don't care about swearing, but in so many games now they try to use it as a dramatic tool and it never works. CoD is up there, but what comes to mind is Mafia 2. The racial slurs weren't that bad (1940's and 50's, little tolerance etc. makes sense). But... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fj5yeV1qo4 It just feels odd doesn't it? Sure, the voice actor's delivery is important, but so is the writing. After hearing so many fucks I must've missed them, as I didn't notice this many:
I don't like a lot of swearing in games. For example, I think the words have much more effect and power where it's one of the only examples in the entire game. If a character is really pissed off and he says, "Just shut the fuck up!", it has much more effect if earlier in the game he wasn't like, "I'm almost out of fucking bullets!" "I need a fucking grenade!" "There's a fucking enemy over fucking there! He doesn't fucking know we're here, we need to be fucking quiet so he won't fucking see us."
Swearing always improves the setting, i don't expect a soldier during a war to shout "Oh nuts a General shoot him"
Swearing always improves the setting, i don't expect a soldier during a war to shout "Oh nuts a General shoot him"
But whenever every other word out of his mouth is "fuck" it just gets ridiculous.
First off, I've been playing games since the Atari 2600 in 1982 when I got it for Christmas so no, I am not a small child. I have a full time job, three children and have all consoles and a gaming PC. I have seen games "evolve" with graphics, sound, story and more adult content but what I have noticed lately is the increasing number of games with a ton of profanity. Call of Duty - Started out with minor profanity and has grow into a lot Battlefield Series - No swearing to excessive Crysis 1 - A bit into A LOT in Crysis 2 Epic Games - A little to A LOT but they also offer OPTIONS to toggle language and gore. Is this trend ok? Do you care? Please keep religious and belittling comments OUT of this thread.
I don't know if you've played Bad Company 2, but nearly every line the Americans say has Fuck in it THERES A FUCKING SNIPER UP THERE OH FUCK ME IM HIT ect
Exactly.. Bad Company 2. Battlefield 2 didn't have f-bombs flying every second.. is it less of game because of that? I don't think so.

I hate how much Black Ops had and Crysis 2 had, it gets annoying but understandable.
Ohai guys.
Thats exactly how I swear :v: "Holy cock and balls, its hotter than a jigaboo on crack out here." Is something I say on a hot day here in Florida.
