Thanks for that. I unfortunately haven't made such great use of the gun yet, but I've started training pistols, so it'll be good to have in the future (shotguns do use pistol skill, right?).
This game scares me sometimes :(

Having Blades/Clubs and Pistols/Rifles comes in handy due to each one being a little more effective on certain enemies. I.E: Karnivores go down relatively easy with gunfire, whereas zombies have a massive bullet soak; which would require blades if you don't want to buy 600 clips to kill a single one.
And yes, Sawn-Offs use pistol skill.

Tagging makes you start with 1 raw in the skill and it makes it easier to grind.
Pistols can be bought at Libby Arms in Corpclave. Check Sargo's warehouse, she has some occassionally.
You can find sawn-off shotguns in the farmhouse in crater rim if you really want a free pistol.
