With my old 3.4K gearscore, I could easily pull 6-7K DPS, outperforming those with 4K+ Gearscore is no match for knowing your class.
I took my alt to toc10 with some random guild today, it's the druid with the 4269 gearscore.

Let's say you have 2 healers and 2 tanks.
Healer A, Healer B, Tank A and Tank B.
There are 2 mobs that need 1 tank each.
Both mobs are 100% equal in damage, health and all that.
Both healer are WAY outgearing the Raid / Dungeon and the tanks are good geared too.
The healers have no problem keeping the tanks alive.
But Tank A have a somewhat better Gears then Tank B and there for Tank B will take a bit more damage.
So in this case Healer A will not heal as much as Healer B because Healer A's tank takes less damage.
This makes Healer A's HPS drop a bit, of course.
By your logic, Healer A is worse then Healer B because Healer A has less HPS then Healer B, even though they are both 100% equally geared and skilled.
TL;DR HPS doesn't matter.

i've done 14,000 hps on my paladin when there's really heavy damage and I was the only healer alive but I almost never get to heal this much because raids simply don't take much damage very often, a lot of hps relies on chance as well
(in this case it was in ICC10 and someone pulled the right group in front of lady deathwhisper and then the spider thing that does the AoE)
I downloaded this gearscore mod because my brother used it and it's not affected my view on anyone. We tanked FoS HC with a death knight who had 28k HP and the heirloom shoulders. He was an absolute idiot but I didn't need GearScore to tell me that.

My gearscore sucked and I tanked Heroics... We wiped one time because I didn't pull a boss back far enough and we got feared... A guy quit and said it was because of my low gearscore and I needed to get a higher one before I do anything like that again.
After we rezzed and got readied up again I tanked the entire Heroic with 2 others ones after and we didn't die at all.
I had like 1900 or 2k gear score with 551 defense and 20k health. No it isn't ideal situation for heroics but saying my gearscore was too low to run ANY heroic was apparently wrong since I have run 3 of them since turning 80.
6000 undead rogue on my ally server. He continuously killed me and three well geared 80's over and over again. This motherfucker spent a lot of time on wow.

Obviously.
He raided. Raids take what, 3-5 hours.
Then enchanting/gemming/shit takes.. 30minutes. That's if you are slow.
So much time spent.

I have played much more then 5 hours and I still only have like 4,3k GS.
I dont know why all your servers have such low gs, but on hyjal if u walk around in dalaran at 6-10 pm on weekends there are MANY poeple with 6k+ gearscore. i have even seen 6.3k. Often times people will make groups for 25man heroic ICC only taking 5.8k gs or more. I bet if u had the BEST gear possible u could have almost 7k gs

saw a dk dps on barthilas that had 6700 had shadowmourne full upgraded t10 and the best stuff you could get for dk dps like trinkets and neck
