To me, most of Painterly is god damn awful. In fact, almost all texture packs are just terrible. Minecraft just doesn't look right when you try and add more detail than there was meant to be. Maybe 32x32 versions of the original textures, but that is about as different as I can bear before it just looks bad.
Most texture packs I see tend to actually have less detail

There's also the fact that pretty much everything is customizable so you can pick your preference. A lot of things have the option of leaving the original minecraft texture in. I also like how it textures passive mobs. Sheep look absolutely fuckass retarded with the default skin. Painterly makes them look passable. [editline]21st May 2011[/editline] Then again that's the whole point of texture packs, personal preference.
I do like Painterly for letting you customise the pack, but I just can't seem to get along with it for some reason. Mobs do look a fair bit better though, you are right there.
I really like the default texture pack, especially since they've added that shader to the game.
I think netherrack looks a lot better in blue, and ive now edited my textures to crank up the saturation (quite a bit) and made the grass grey, now minecraft looks like boss!
It fits the style the game has, so I like it. I used to use Misa's HD Realism pack for a while, which is nice, but overall I think I just plain prefer using the default, for whatever reason. It's all a matter of opinion though.

after switching to jolicraft I'm never FUCKING EVER using anything else
I think cobblestone looks good
you think your shitty little pebble cobblestone looks good? god-tier
Above all I hate glass, why the hell are there lines through the middle of it?
Above all I hate glass, why the hell are there lines through the middle of it?
So you can tell there is glass there and not air?
So you can tell there is glass there and not air?
Wouldn't that be what the border's for?
I like xencontendi because its a nice looking alternative while staying true to the minecraft style
One of the Doku packs crashes me whenever I right-clicked with anything. I removed it. ^_^ I have a better one now.
My second favorite texture pack is Xaiwaker. It's a nice change of pace.
That pack is terrible, he stole all of the textures from Frendens pack. Then just changed them a little bit.
He has his permission and I like the subtle changes to make it feel Zelda. Shoot me.
Are there any packs which take the default one and improve on it? So it's the original just more detailed and pleasing to the eyeballs.

Only thing I would change with the default texture pack is: 1. Water/Lava - doesn't look realistic enough, 2. Cobblestone - although I don't know what it would look better as. But It's pretty good generally.
You might like Quandary: http://www.retributiongames.com/quandary/
For some reason Quandary hasn't appealed to me until just now. Anyway, I use Painterly now, and I love it.
It's horrible. Cobblestone looks like those Tv channels that you don't get a signal from in the old days. And the torches look like fucking cigarettes, The water doesn't look anything like water, everything looks boring. Oh and glass is bad too. I can't think of everything that sucks about it right now. Theres so much.

Its a good pack, I just much prefer Jerdoku or Jolicraft
jolicraft master race
I tried jolicraft but it became an eyesore because of how silly it is.
I have to deal with it, Doku stopped updating his pack and personally, the new different versions of the Dokucraft aren't nearly as good as the original. It's better than Painterly and others like it. Those ones just add too much noise and normally make the world look really dark.
