Look for exposed coal on the side of mountains or look for a natural cave.

Thanks tons, I found 20 coal ore in the middle of a bunch of randomly generated hills.

Use winrar (or anything like it) to pack it, then you can upload the file.
To find saves hit Start+R and copy this in: %appdata%\.minecraft\saves
So I decided to buy minecraft a few days ago, after I finally decided to take a look at it earlier this week. So far I created a new single-player gamesave , loaded it up and noticed it was a snow world. :iia:
After exploring for a little while and not finding any coal, I notice this HUGE hill with one side being a fairly steep hill. With one block row keeping the cliff from being a straight drop, I climb up most of the way, find coal, and start digging into the side of the cliff. Fast forward a few days, and I have a workbench, furnace, 2 large chests, and a cave I carved out that leads all the way down to the very bottom of the level. I'll post pictures once I get all the decorations done...
My house is high up, supported by cobblestone pillars. I want as many functional sections as possible. Here's what I have:
-The entrance. Attatched to a cliff, looks cool, not much here. Bridges across to crafting and storage.
-Crafting and storage. Chests and a crafting table. "Central" room.
-Tree plantation.
-Wheat plantation.
-Forge.
-Vertical mine shaft with mini quarries and mines sticking out at different sections.
I am going to add:
-Dining hall. Will have a table, "stools" (unless you can make chairs, can you?), paintings and the like.
-Kitchen. Food storage and a crafting table for cooking. May add further cooking stuff here, mabye keep bowls etc here.
-Weaponry section. This will include weapon storage and shooting range. Is it possible to display weapons? It'd look cool here.
Anything else I can add? I need ideas.

Find lava and mine all round it, for whatever reason diamond spawns in larger quantities around lava.

Just reminding everyone that this today at 10AM EST we are switching my S2 map for the entire day, and giving everyone TNT. Wha.. Why?!? Well, because TNT is amazingly fun and you never really have a big oppertunity to blow stuff up. So later today the map will be switched over to a clone of the s1 map, and at 10AM(EST) TNT will be un-Blacklisted. Everyone who joins will be able to experience the amazing /item commands (TNT is 46). And at the end of the day we will be posting the carto of the finished map.
Server will be open to the public for that day. The IP is [highlight]s2.drunkenminers.com[/highlight]

i know they say sections for only 1 game are dumb but Minecraft REALLY needs its own section.

i just realised, reed is probably you best friend when making underwater buildings
-it provides air pockers
-very fast to remove
-can be re used for books
only bad things is when a tunnel is 2 blocks high, the bamboo probbably starts growing 1 on top, making it annoying to build a roof on.

Just delete your bin folder and it'll redownload everything. The other suggestion is a better way but this is easier.

Only 5ish hours to go!
WHen does the TNT event end? I want to partake, but if I go to bed now, I'll wake up at about 8 hours from now, about 1pm est. If it lasts for the day, it'll be awesome.
I have loaded myself up with gear - two swords, a pickaxe, flint and steel, steel bowls, a compass and much more - and sailed off to my old, ruined and burned home. I'm going to put out the fires, loot the place, and also get some lava in my bowls.

No, i still think weed would be better.
Was looking at my map on Alpha Vespucchi, seems I managed to build my mine just out of reach of 3 diamond deposits. On the bright side, I also built it away from lava. Couldn't accurately tell what depth they were at, though.
Here's a night picture of my place as it is at the moment; fires mark cave entrances (except for the 2 by the stripped hill, those are for lighting as I ran out of coal at the time. The one on the top of the hill by the lower left is for navigation.)
