A fiSSSSSSSSSSsssssssssh?
It's a great idea. Its way too easy right now to make "safe" zones right now. You can still keep your house and such permanently lit with lanterns, but now you can't go make 200 torches and light up every cave within a square mile. This makes exploring more challenging.
Exploring is already challenging. Each new cave is a threat, and once you've cleared it there's no need for it to go back to being a threat again. Which is what will happen when the torches change.

Holy shit you guys. I just found some slime, on peacful. It scared the fucking shit out of me. I think i need a few minutes. Jesus Christ that was the scariest moment in minecraft of my life.
If torches are really going to be updated they may as well replace them with the lanterns.

Did you rename it to World1 ~ World5?
Yeah I did, but I'll try again tomorrow.
Oh wow, I saw the news when I got home from school. Oh wow oh gee oh wow oh gee oh wow oh gee.
How will lanterns be crafted?
Is Wombo's texture pack he was making out yet? I can't be bothered to look through the 20 pages I missed here.
I think Torches should still be infinite, but Lanterns produce x2(or any other dumb number) more light then the torch would.
The 31st seems so far away.
I'm not really too worried about torches, assuming that lanterns aren't too difficult to make.
While i hate the torch update too, I'm sure somebody can mod it to make them permanent/a very long lasting time. Also, lanterns are confirmed, right? If so, will they have brighter light and a bigger range?
Notch should put in ropes or something, it's like a ladder, but if you place it, it goes down 8 blocks. Would be awesome, and it would give a better use for the cloth thread you get from spiders
Would be awesome if it was like the rope in Opposing Force, which you could hold onto and swing with. Could make for some cave exploring!
I agree, but replacing all your torches is going to be annoying at first - although everyone will likely start a new map because I doubt you'll be able to keep your current map AND have biomes.
Notch could easily change the itemid of torches to lanterns, and then all existing torches will become lanterns.
How will lanterns be crafted?
Probably will involve coal and iron, but he might make up some crazy new fuel for it, like fish oil or some shit.

Probably the best idea.

Whaling would be the best update ever :v:
i hope notch knows what he's doing
he HAS to complete all the things in the list, in a month (ok, possible)
he HAS to prepare the site for the incoming registers and dowloads at once, im sure everyone will download RIGHT at the moment it will be released (if not sleeping/behind the PC)
just have to find a way to get minecraft without i lagging my pc, mysteriously :frown:
I don't feel like having a repeat of the TF2 update LAST year. :gib:
How will lanterns be crafted?
You have to milk the tit of a female creeper and wait 30 Minecraft days for it to turn into a super oil that will then power a lantern. But the lantern requires 8 stacks of 64 obsidian all placed around a torch.
Probably the best idea.
Here's an idea. Torches stay the same, and lanterns are finite.

Like a friendly gnome, or harmless companion cube
I would love something like that.
For my texture pack, i finally decided to redo the cobblestone:

I'm not sure if I like it quite yet, what do you guys think?
I think that torches should be infinite, but once you get too deep, they no longer produce enough light to make "safe zones". At this point you would need to use lanterns to stop the spawning of mobs. If you get to diamond level, nothing should make a "safe zone".
The lanterns better have a much wider range of illumination.
I'm OK with non-infinite torches. I'm sure Notch will put a good time limit on them, and besides that, it's not like you run out of coal.
Lanterns will probably be similar to torches, except that you use an iron bar instead of a stick.
Hey everybody quick problem. I moved my World2 folder from my laptop to my desktop. For some reason, I can use Cartograph and INVEdit and stuff on it, but it doesn't show up in my game. Anybody know what's wrong?

I want to say it does not tile well but that just might be me looking at it wrong.
How would one craft these magical lanters?
Non infinite torches wont be much of a problem for me.
I got 49 coal in one trip.
