I'm a bit late to this question but here it is anyway
Redstone creates circuitry. Redstone wires send on or off signals. Torches are used to create logic gates. Example: You stick a torch on a block. Then you input your signals to the block and output signals from the torch. The torch will only send an output when all inputs to the block are off.

"Fun" means different things to different people. Fun can be building mob traps, or wiring up pointless intricate redstone circuits.
Though, I believe redstone input to a track section can toggle it to a different track, and carts moving over pressure plates send outputs to redstone circuits. Think about that.
