I find stuff like this just makes Minecraft more fun, once you get over the initial rage.
I had a huge stone castle, with a wooden interior. Down in the basement I had a cobblestone generator. I was off at the other side of my map exploring when a secret Friday update was released, so I restarted MC so it would patch. This was when I found out Notch had given lava a heat radius or something, and changed the way fire spread. I panicked and ran back to the castle as fast as I could, only to see the whole thing up in flames. I fought a way into my storage room and grabbed a a load of buckets to try and put the fire out using the moat but it was too far gone, so I just stood back and watched.
It looked pretty epic, burning to a stone carcass in the dead of night. Once dawn broke I decided to rebuild the entire place, block by block and now it's identical to how it was before the fire, plus an awesome sense of achievement and unscripted story.
