Open minecraft on your computer, login, click multiplayer and type 127.0.0.1
Open your webbrowser
Go to [url]http://www.whatismyip.org/[/url]
Send that ip to your friend
He opens minecraft on his computer, logs in, clicks multiplayer and types the ip you gave him

You need to forward the ports then. See if your router is listed on [url]http://portforward.com/[/url]

Also, make sure you port forward to YOUR port.
Go to the command prompt type 'ipconfig' and look at the IPv4 address. That's what you need to port forward to.

oh, its a netgear dgn2000.
I have 25565 for tcp and udp forwarded to the ipv4 thing from the ipconfig. is that correct, and he tried joining and it said unknown host.

I was bit surprised when i saw that.
You shouldn't need any details for netgear, I have a netgear and it's working fine.
