Open minecraft.jar in winrar and edit the terrain.png. There are also many other things you can edit but that is the main one.

Use something with transparency support and has a grid feature(Makes your life so much easier)

SMP servers have no damage until Notch enables it and i know for a fact:

I had that the first time I started it. It was caused by putting in extra spaces in the batch folder when there should have been none. Check that first.

It may also mean that the file doesn't have the rights to write/read
I managed to acquire 385 feathers through zombie farming, now I only need to find a gravel pit so I can get 385 flint. I wish that the dungeon was a skeleton dungeon, though.
