Create a server within Terraria as usual.
Hit Windows key + R, type "cmd", hit enter.

Meteor Hamaxe.
Ball o hurt.
Light's bane.
some accessories from dungeoneering and sky islands.
Where do you guys suppose I go from there?
I also can't find a handgun for the life of me.

collect ten lenses make a suspicious looking eye at a demon altar summon eye of cthulu by using it at night kill eye of cthulu wait for dryad to show up buy purification powder use that to turn ebonstone into stone tunnel through to the black orbs and break three of them to summon eater of worlds get demonite and shadow scales from that boss by killing it and make a demonite pickaxe.
That's how I did it.

could someone explain what the deal with terraria is
I mean I like minecraft but all I gather from the trailer is that this is minecraft 2d with proper water physics and more interesting monsters

I hated Minecraft but I like this game, so it can't be that similar.

It's not at all like minecraft except for the building bit. It's more of a dungeon crawling RPG.

You only need a hole in the wall behind the sapling. Also the grass will prevent it from growing.
