It just occurred to me that one could theoretically start a local server (by failing to properly forward ports, like me) and join it with two separate characters. Tested, and it worked, it doesn't seem like servers refuse multiple connections from one IP. So you could basically use one character as a pack mule for your main, if you don't mind having poor performance from having 3 instances of Terraria open.

Need a server guys.. Any going at all?
