I'm going to get this and even if nobody likes it will be part of the minority who does. Just like with IW
The game looks really good. Looks like the rebirth of cyberpunk in gaming is finally here.

Deus Ex gameplay detailed
It's getting closer. We still don't know exactly when Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be available for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, but we do know it will be early 2011, and we do know we're excited about it in around 50 different ways. Which is apt, of course, because Human Revolution is, as much as its predecessors, a game about choice and consequence – and mixing things up as you go about making choices and living with the consequences. Today developer Eidos Montreal unveils an exciting chunk of gameplay footage, demonstrating some of the augmentations that you will be able to put to use as you get onto the tail of its future-noir conspiracy. As with the original unveil trailer, we thought it would be a good idea to seek some clarification in advance, so we watched the trailer a dozen times and slung some questions over to affable game director Jean-Francois Dugas, who obliged us with these replies. Eurogamer: What aspect of Deus Ex's gameplay are you trying to showcase with the new trailer? Jean-Francois Dugas: We really wanted to give a glimpse of the various ways to get the job done. Whether it's about the different weapons, the various augmentations or the alternate paths, you're never reduced to a single way to deal with an obstacle. And that is at the heart of the trailer. Eurogamer: What's the orange line that appears around certain items and enemies about? Jean-Francois Dugas: It's part of the Retinal Prosthesis augmentation that you get at the beginning of the game - it gives you information on things you can interact with, etc. Eurogamer: What are Praxis Points and how do they work? Jean-Francois Dugas: You earn Experience Points for every mission you complete, every secret you discover, and various other meaningful actions you take. By collecting experience points you will unlock Praxis points - something you need in order to acquire and unlock new augmentation abilities. Eurogamer: The upgrade selected – Move/Throw Heavy Objects – appeared to allow Adam to move the crate so he could reach the vent. Are there any other examples of a similar application of this upgrade? Jean-Francois Dugas: Yes, you can use objects as weapons by throwing them on enemies. You move objects and then take cover behind them, you can stack them to reach hard to reach areas, etc. Eurogamer: What is the P.E.P.S. and how does it work? Jean-Francois Dugas: It's a non-lethal weapon using a Pulsed Energy Projection System. So, every time you hit a target with this weapon, the enemy is going to be pushed away and stunned for a moment, giving you the time to disappear before he gets his senses together. Eurogamer: Secondary weapons include the EMP grenade – what other secondary weapons are there in the game? Jean-Francois Dugas: We have frag grenades and mine templates to name a couple of examples. What's interesting about mine templates is that you can combine them with any types of grenades you have (i.e. Frag, EMP, etc.). And then, you can stick them to any kind of surfaces as a trap for the enemies. Eurogamer: We see Adam have a robot turn on his enemies – are there other examples of how Adam can manipulate the environment? Jean-Francois Dugas: You can shut them off too. The same with cameras as well. Eurogamer: How does stealth (cloaking) work, exactly? I assume it doesn't last forever, or does it? Jean-Francois Dugas: It uses energy. We have what we call "passive" and "active" augmentations. All "active" augmentations use energy. When depleted, you can't use it any more. So, you need to find/buy nutrients to recharge your energy cells to use your augmentations again. Eurogamer: We see a hacking mini-game – how does it work, exactly? Jean-Francois Dugas: The hacking screen represents a network that you have infiltrated through an I/O Port. Your goal is to reach the network's Registry before its Diagnostic Sub-Routine discovers your original point of entry (the I/O Port) and kicks you out. To progress to the Registry, you need to capture nodes on your way and each one has a rating influencing on the probabilities the Diagnostic Sub-Routine will detect you or not. Eurogamer: Adam kicks a box at an enemy – what other environmental objects can be used against enemies and how? Jean-Francois Dugas: Anything that is pickable. It goes from boxes to trash cans, etc. You can also throw objects to create a distraction sending the enemies in the opposite direction, etc. Eurogamer: We briefly see the weapon combine feature – what can you tell us about that? Jean-Francois Dugas: You can combine them with weapon upgrades, basically. There are four basic ones (Ammo count, RoF [Rate of Fire], Reload speed & Damage) that can be combined to most weapons and we have few special ones as well that can be attached to certain weapons. Eurogamer: We see explosive rounds used – what other rounds will be in the game and how do they work? Jean-Francois Dugas: They're different calibres more or less effective depending the type of enemy your facing. Eurogamer: There is a moment when Adam lands on the floor in slow motion with a bubble around him – is it triggered by the player as a character skill or is it part of a cut scene? Jean-Francois Dugas: It's the "Icarus Landing System" augmentation. It is triggered automatically when you have the augmentation unlocked but the way you land (softly or with a bang to stun enemies) is done manually as you fall. Eurogamer: The trailer ends with what looks like a defensive manoeuvre that deflects bullets – is this a special skill? What other types of this kind are there? Jean-Francois Dugas: It's not deflecting bullets. It's an offensive augmentation called the "Typhoon Explosive System" that allows you to launch mini-explosives in a 360 degree arc around you. Eurogamer: The Laser Rifle looks like fun – how does it work? Jean-Francois Dugas: It's a weapon that allows you to shoot through walls so you just have to shoot, really. Combined with the Smart Vision (e.g. through thru walls) it makes for deadly combo. However, I'm telling you right away, it's a very difficult weapon to get... Deus Ex: Human Revolution is due to be released Q12011 on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Q&A Revealed
1. Is every option (choice you have to make in order to progress) obvious/presented clearly before you? No. Absolutely not. Some choices will be presented in ways that the outcome will be more obvious but, a lot of choices will be more or less hidden in the challenges you face and in the narrative. Depending on how you react, later Electronic Theatre Imageoutcomes will vary. We didn't want to make a game where all the choices are telegraphed because it makes the choice more often than not based on how you want to boost your character as opposed as being immersed in the fantasy of the game. It's definitely more subtle than a lot of games. 2. Will we encounter books, news terminals, newspapers, ATMs; and will some even be influenced by your own actions? You will encounter a lot of things to read like newspapers, eBooks, etc. Unfortunately, we had to cut the ATMs because we were running out of time. 3. How many items will Adam be able to carry, and does this exclude weapons? Depends on the size of your inventory. If you invest in it, you'll carry a lot and if you don't, you'll have to make difficult choices on what to keep with you or not. It includes everything but "story items". 4. Regarding the Icarus Landing system: Is there any scientific research or advancement made that support the concept behind this aug? How can it be done? The Icarus Landing System is a discreet augmentation surgically implanted in the user's lower back, slightly above the coccyx at the base of the vertebral column. The device has an accelerative descent sensor built in; in freefall, the unit will automatically activate the patented High-Fall Safeguard System, an EMF decelerator generating a fixed-focus electromagnetic lensing field, projected downward along the plane of the drop. This field pushes against the Earth's magnetosphere and slows the user's descent to a manageable velocity, allowing him to fall from almost any height (within reason) to a relatively soft landing. 5. Will augmentations be permanent once installed, or can players mix-and-match augs or remove them? There are indeed permanent. 6. How do augmentations like the claymore work when Adam wears his coat? There are holes in his coat that allows for the claymore to work perfectly fine. 7. How are the augmentations divided amongst the four pillars that have been mentioned? There divided in different categories like Cranium, arms, legs, torso, etc. 8. What are the augmentations that Adam starts out with? Single Takedown, IFF, Retinal Prosthesis, basic hacking ability and the Infolink essentially. 9. How does health regeneration work? What will trigger it, how fast is it going to be, will it use energy? When you take damage your health goes down. If you have being hit for "x" seconds, than it starts to regenerate somewhat slowly. It's not as quick as games like Halo or CoD. You really need to stay out of the firing zone otherwise you won't last long. When in trouble, you can use consumables (if you have any) to replenish it faster or to boost your health when it's already full. 10. Will there be weapon stores for purchasing ammunition and tools? Yes, there are some hidden merchants offering different kind of weapons and items. You need to find them though. 11. If players choose to play in a certain manner, they're presumably going to be doing a lot of hacking throughout this game. Considering it sounds like the hacking mini-game is quite complex (and presumably at Electronic Theatre Imageleast reasonably time consuming) what have you done to ensure that it doesn't get incredibly tedious over time (Bioshock's hacking mini-game as a poor example)? Every hacking session is different. Based on your level of hacking augmentations, the chances that the Sub-Routine will detect you will vary. And each time, you need to adapt to what happens. Also, there are some rewards (credits, virus programs, etc.) that can be accessed but always while managing the Sub-Routine system trying to catch you. So, it becomes a game of adaptation and how much risks are you willing to take to get additional rewards. 12. Will I be able to pick all pieces of junk and different stuff just like in DX1 and use them to distract enemies or do something else with it? You'll be able to use different types of boxes to distract NPCs indeed. If you're referring to things like a pencil or a glass the answer is no. We have a very detailed and rich world to discover so we had to make some tradeoffs in terms of the scope of interactive objects in order to keep a smooth framerate. 13. Why were BE cells, lockpicks and multitools removed? We wanted to make hacking more important and deeper. And since we had so many features to develop for this game, we had to focus and lose some things like lockpicks and multitools. 14. Will the earlier Deus Ex music theme return? Maybe... 15. Are we able to HOLSTER OUR WEAPON in Deus Ex Human Revolution? Of course we are. Deus Ex is not a typical shooter when it's all about gunning down enemies. Your journey brings you in civilized places where guns are not well appreciated. So, holstering it will make people more willing to speak to you. Who would chat with someone pointing a gun on our head?
hnngh [editline]18th November 2010[/editline] Looks fantastic.
Awesomeness is over the line.
If this game shows even more depth, I'll buy it for sure
This made me want to try Deus Ex: Invisible War again. I started talking to Billie and was just completely over it. That game is awful. This looks great though.
If this game shows even more depth, I'll buy it for sure
One of the mods on the official forum got to playtest and has gone as far as saying its got more depth than the first game tenfold.
looks amazing. i'm sold
This looks like the first stealth game that can compare to Chaos Theory, and also just an amazing game in every category. I honestly do not see any chance that they have left to be able to fuck it up.
That bald guy looks like he's from Dino Crisis 3.
That gameplay video HHNNNNGGGG I'm so psyched for this game.
My boner hit the tray holding my keyboard and knocked it off my desk

Can I have this game now? :saddowns:
Seems like its gunna turn into a shitty shooter but I'll buy it because its deus ex.

i see bad points to this game 1: it doesnt make sense that technology is more advanced in a PREQUEL 2: FUCKING GEARS OF WAR COVER SYSTEM 3: the graphics WILL MAKE MY COMPUTER ASPLODE some of the art looks a bit off aswell, but otherwise it looks good
i see bad points to this game 1: it doesnt make sense that technology is more advanced in a PREQUEL 2: FUCKING GEARS OF WAR COVER SYSTEM 3: the graphics WILL MAKE MY COMPUTER ASPLODE some of the art looks a bit off aswell, but otherwise it looks good
I can't remember my Deus Ex much, but it's not more advanced: These are cybernetic enhancements, in DE1, they were nanotechnology enhancements (You know, much more technologically difficult). And isn't there supposed to be some kind of war between HR and DE1 or something? Might've resulted in the loss of some technology loss.
look at the robots mate, look at everything metal looking in the game. only the WORD nanotech makes de1 a sequel to hr, and i could almost swear nanotech apears to be in hr too. DE1 had helicopters and shacks, this game has spaceships and thousand foot tall constructs in a variatey of odd positions
i see bad points to this game 1: it doesnt make sense that technology is more advanced in a PREQUEL 2: FUCKING GEARS OF WAR COVER SYSTEM 3: the graphics WILL MAKE MY COMPUTER ASPLODE some of the art looks a bit off aswell, but otherwise it looks good
1. There was some technological downfall before DE1, if I remember correctly, been a while since I last played it. 2. It's bearable if done right. 3. Hm, Upgr8s.
Also, regarding the first Deus Ex, a lot of the stuff we have today is more advanced that the portrayal in the first game - even though it was set in 2052. So we just made a decision that: 'let's make sure it looks a bit more like things are today.' Like our TVs are bigger and flatter than the tellys in Deus Ex 1. It's a mundane example, but there are a whole lot more. We also need and like to have fun designing these games, so we need some crazy things to develop! The way we see it also is almost as if Deus Ex 1 is after the great collapse - it's set in 2033. After that the huge earthquakes, the whole economic collapse... everything is going to go to shit. And Human Revolution takes place right before that.
Still though, in DX1 the buildings just looked like the buildings of today with a few high tech bits, in this new game they look like it's the far future. I know there was a collapse but did all the buildings and technology just vanish into thin air? Looks to me like the artists for this game seem to be ignoring the setting for the original altogether. Don't get me wrong the game looks amazing, but why did they have to slap prequel on the title, a sequel would have been more fitting. I wouldn't even know it was a prequel if i hadn't been told. also on the mechs, in dx1 they are horribly disfigured with wires and shit in this they look more advanced then JC fucking Denton. Fuck i'm nitpicking.
The technologies do look more advanced since a lot of time has passed from the first game. In DE1 they thought the future would look like this, with only 4:3 monitors and lots of things we already passed on. Not everybody played the first game, so they would be like "uh, looks like the techs are the same as they are today" if Eidos followed DE1 2052 technologies. People already got over the cover system, I think, so you're a bit late for the fight. The only thing that disappoints me a bit is that people who didn't play the first game are going to play all actionish shooting and fucking everything up. Seriously, there isn't much stealth games now and I'm happy that Deus Ex makes an exception.

Also isn't the area in Deus Ex 3 fairly successful? In Deus Ex 1 they were royally fucked over by the plague and there were riots and terrorist attacks everywhere. Everything pretty much just degraded into slums. Although the richer buildings like that one mansion did look a bit too modern.
Fuck. First DA2 is delayed and now Portal 2. It's up to Human Revolution to save February.
Yup, there was some sort of crash right before Deus Ex. In Deus Ex the whole world is 20 minutes away from destruction.
Yup, there was some sort of crash right before Deus Ex. In Deus Ex the whole world is 20 minutes away from destruction.
Isn't that also a possible ending in Invisible War too? (yes I liked Invisible War).
Fuck. First DA2 is delayed and now Portal 2. It's up to Human Revolution to save February.
And Duke Nukem.
Ok so I never played Deus Ex when it came out so I tried a few months ago and I must have done it wrong or something because I was terrible at the very first part. I never went back to it since.
