OnLive is a brand new gaming platform released shortly ago, OnLive was first released as a subscription based program, but is now COMPLETELY FREE.
But the games are much more expensive than retail PC games. :downs:
OnLive removes the hassles of ongoing PC gaming hardware frustrations, frame rates that suck dick and just plain out shitty performance.
Now you have to live with a shitty 30frames per second and internet problems and lag spikes instead of very rare hardware problems. I'm having >10 internet problems for every hardware problem I encounter.
There are multiple "servers" stashed over the country that render games for you
Except if you live anywhere but major cities in the US.
Now, what's REALLY FUCKING COOL about OnLive is that I can play Mafia II on a 8 year old Netbook with NO GPU, all you need is a 5Mbps-10Mbps internet connection, it doesn't lag at all...
It doesn't lag at all if you ignore the constant input lag which is a lot worse than graphical lag that only occurs from time to time.
All this+only medium graphics settings+only 720p resolution=shit that's not worth it unless you are a very casual gamer that only plays high end games.
I like the thing that old pc's can play new games, but this will never win over an standard new gaming desktop
-snip-
thats what THEY state.
Fuck another thread about this shit?
Yes, we know OnLive exist, and have three bottles of wine saved for the day it crashes and burns.
You guys are being so critical of it. Wouldn't you rather play a game on low settings instead of spending 500+ on a new desktop or a console? Or not at all. Obviously the service is useless to those of you that have computers that can play them without streaming them, but it would be crazy helpful to someone with a netbook.

Assassins Creed II is $20, Mafia II is $50. The prices are normal.
I live in Canada and it was fine for me. I was getting 50-60 FPS with Red Faction Guerrilla and it was playable with the slight input delay I had. It also looked to be medim/high, sun rays and SSAO were enabled.
You guys are bashing this without even trying it.

people do see this, and some said it too. But the point is, thats all its good for

Except it's also good for testing games before you buy them, as well as just renting them for so many days so you can just complete the game and get the enjoyment out of it.
I've personally tried OnLive out, and it seems like a very high quality service. The input lag isn't that bad with certain games, such as Assassin's Creed 2, but can make reflex games, like Unreal Tournament 3, not as enjoyable as they could be. From what I understand, they also said that they would be offering a service so that you can pay a monthly fee and get unlimited access to games over 6 months old. If the price is reasonable, that sounds like an awesome deal.
The monthly fee has been dropped.

Or is it optional, like some sort of premium membership?

A 50$ costs 50€ here (if Steam and retail is any indication) while I can get them from Amazon or Game for 30€.

I read that they limit the framerate to 30FPS. I just read it again and apparently that was only about Crysis.

Also Crysis.
I am currently working on a review of the service and got a VIP account in the process, I gotta say the experience really differs from game to game, Hitman for example works just fine, same for RFA, but some other titles, especially shooters, can really become a pain in the ass.
Not to even talk about the Battle L.A. game, which is already awful on its own.
Anyway, you should give it another chance if oyu tried it before, especially if you didn't play though multiple of the games they offer, some of the stuff works just awesome, and you might even have use for your 10 year old PC again.
And hell, they even give away their console with pretty much any pre-order.
ONLIVE: input lag simulator®
It was a lot better than before today, I could actually aim fine in RFA.
I've gotten two free games from them since released. Mainly because I am a bad ass.
I'll never pay near full price for a game that is stored somewhere else and only available for a limited time, that's stupid
Only works in some areas, lag depends on proximity to servers.
It's an interesting concept, but everybody got pissed off by games not running at max settings.
I'm playing Amnesia on this, got it for free in that promo, and I must say, it works really, really well. I love that you don't have to download, the lag is nothing (I don't really notice it in Amnesia anyway), and it's fun to watch others play as well, even though they usually are a bunch of retards.
But it won't beat steam.
Just throwing this out there:
Source-based games give you 100ms of fake input lag with all forms of movement except mouse as part of their clientside prediction scheme.

I'd rather spend 500+ on a new desktop or console than play on low with horrible resolution.
Tried the beta back in the day, was meh, though lag was less than expected.

Why? I know i'd much rather play games on a shitty computer at shitty graphics then spend my money on something better than some £800 computer which i'd play for about an hour a day. People always go on about how graphics doesn't make a game yet you still get a load of people in this thread bitching about how bad graphics = shit
Was just playing Fear 2, works like a charm, perfectly fine to aim, seems like they improved my regions connection or something. Now theres a spectator who REALLY wants to talk to me and watch me, for soem reaosn my voice doesnt reach him, I can hear him fine. He even is changing PC just to watch me play :V
Someday we will surely have the internet speeds for a service like this, but not now.
Its only using about 700 kb/s, most people have that nowadays, at least in better established countries.
Only problem is lag, makes game unplayable.
This lag cannot be fixed as stated by OnLive.
Therefore, I do not care or give a fuck about it. Why make a service you KNOW is not going to work and then ask way too much monies for it.
Red Faction works perfect, just try the OnLive exclusive demo.

The US is not one of them.
In 5-10 years time this will probably be how gaming ends up working, or it wouldn't surprise me if it played a major part. At the moment the majority of internet connections are simply not up to the speed needed to play this properly, but I don't really understand the hatred that this product is getting. It seems like people are just afraid to have their expensive gaming PCs be obsolete or something (I have to admit, this annoyed me at first).
Still, it's a bold move for them.
I hate this shit, its gonna fail, nobody needs this.
