Communist blood is addicting.
I still think overall, when you look at all of the fallout games put together (Excluding those couple knock off ones like Brotherhood of Steel n' such), It comes out to a great series, and thankfully didn't pull a Activision, and beat their games like a dead horse.
That's because Fallout doesn't appeal to every player who just want to shoot stuff.

You can't take on a Deathclaw with a 9mm pistol, it's suicide.
I got my new PC at the start of February, bought a load of games from the past few years I haven't been able to run until now. Played through Fallout 3 once (yet to play the DLC) and I'm currently playing through New Vegas for the second time (I sort of rushed through last time, missed most sidequests and everything). I really love New Vegas.
I've never played the first two Fallout games, but this thread has got me interested. I'm not really big on turn based combat, but love the whole Fallout setting - do you reckon I'd still have fun with them?

Getting the hang of this..
Fuck, my 360 has just stopped reading discs altogether instead of me having to open/close the tray 25 times so it can start.

Hey Rex wanna play frisbee ? Cmon boy FETCH!
How do you do that? Is it an exploit or did you modify the way it moves yourself?

If you enjoy the setting and storyline, the combat shouldn't bother you too much. Sure, there's a lot of combat, but it flows pretty naturally, and the questing is really the main focus of the game. If you're planning on playing through them, be sure to get them officially & unofficially patched up, along with a hi-resolution mod - they were notoriously buggy games.

I would assume it's done in the GECK, so a whole new weapon with the throw power adjusted or something I'd expect.
It's done in the GECK. I took the Frag Mine's projectile, duplicated it, changed the move speed to something along the lines of 4000 and the gravity to something really low (currently it's at 0 but I play to make it have a verrrrrry slight arc).
If you want, I can upload an .esp with that. I guess I can put it in Doc Mitchell's house or something
Where's the default texture location? I'm editing the Frag Mine and I need the default textures.

Once you get past the annoying interface they're great games.
I'll have to give them a try then, thanks for the advice guys.
I would play them, but I can't manage to get Fallout to work properly and I don't have $10 for Fallout 2.
Stealing from guys is pretty profitable in FO2. Even if you aren't good at it, you can just keep loading your save until the guy doesn't notice you taking his stuff.
You can get a shotgun in the first town if you steal it from one of the slavers.
After I finish my energy weapons run in new vegas I'm doing a retard-unarmed run.
Is playing a retard in new vegas as fun as fallout 1/2?

Not at all. Top-down Fallout retard runs have more options and storylines.
I was also thinking of doing a Melee/Unarmed run, i'm just thinking of what a 3rd useful tag skill would be.

Don't do both melee and unarmed. You should almost always tag a Primary, (Unarmed, Melee, Guns, Explosives, Energy) Secondary (Medicine, Survival, Repair, Sneak), And Support (Speech, Barter, Science, Lockpick) Skill. Of course, tagging doesn't matter like it did in the first 2 games, so whatever.
[editline]10th April 2011[/editline]
Depending on how you wanted to roll, I would recommend Unarmed (Because it is so WONDERFULLY broken), Survival (2x/3x as effective food depending on how high you level it), and Speech (Because punching people to death should always be a last resort). You could also go Melee/Sneak/Lockpick.
What's up with the Lone Wanderer being able to understand all the Chinese people in Operation Anchorage so fluently, as well as being able to speak to ([sp]and possibly convince to kill himself[/sp]) Jingwei?
Maybe because its just a simulation?

Lockpick is sort of a joke in fallout 3 and New Vegas. The idea of 4 lock levels is just terrible EG: "You're lockpick level 49, you can't pick this 50 lock." Should have made it so locks have 4 difficulties, and you level of lockpick makes them easier to pick, but you can attempt to pick any lock at any time but if you fail a certain number of attempts, the lock jams. Better to invest points in something else.
It was way better in fallout 2 actually, you can blow apart wooden doors with explosives, and you can lockpick most doors many number of times; but doing too many failed attempts jams the lock. Having lockpick sets in your inventory makes your lockpick skill increase. Mechanical doors require electronic lockpicks.
Really hope that gets changed in later games :saddowns:

Moments like that that make it a great game :v:
Maybe for lighter locked doors (like wood, such as those broken-up doors you always see) you can just kick them down (and your kick effectiveness is increased with your strength, which allows you to kick down heavier doors, within reason), and heavier doors need explosives to bust down. And if you pick the lock, as your lockpick skill increases, it highlights the area that is likely to unlock it.
EDIT: Alrite then fine. What if you're trying to be stealthy, and can't afford to alert every enemy in the area? hhmmmmm? Lockpicking could make the door open much more quietly, so you could sneak up on the enemies in the room. And for blasting down doors, the huge heavy metal doors that look like they're built to withstand a nuclear warhead? You think a stick of dynamite could destroy it?
What I would really like is for skills to increase as you get experience with them by a reasonably low number, like .5 or something, I.E. everytime you get a successful melee kill, your melee increases a little bit, and when you pick a lock, your skill increases. It could be balanced by giving you less points to increase your skills by as you level up, although just increasing it by a low number would be enough balance if they pulled it off right.

Since it's just a simulation, all of the Chinese speak English.
Since it's just a simulation, all of the Chinese speak English.
No they don't. The game translates it into English through the form of subtitles, but if you have listened to them, or gotten far enough to talk to Jingwei, then you can hear them speak Chinese.
And the argument 'it's a simulation' doesn't make sense.
A: You don't need to gain any information you didn't already know when you enter a simulation (ie Tranquility Lane) or atleast you don't seem to.
B: Even if it were thanks to the simulation, why would they make American soldiers learn Chinese?
The only possible explanation is that the Lone Wanderer is fluent in Chinese... which is unlikely thanks to no evidence bar what I've just said.

Using explosives to be able to blow open doors would render lockpick a bit useless, it's only good for one action as it is.

It's an inaccuracy due to it being a simulation. Read the terminal in the outcast office.
any really good overhaul type mods out there for New Vegas?
The simulation, what with being something that plugs into your brain and all, probably shoves the English into your brain so you can understand him. Or perhaps the PipBoy translates it (unlikely, considering how it deals with other languages).
