Lockpick is sort of a joke in fallout 3 and New Vegas. The idea of 4 lock levels is just terrible EG: "You're lockpick level 49, you can't pick this 50 lock." Should have made it so locks have 4 difficulties, and you level of lockpick makes them easier to pick, but you can attempt to pick any lock at any time but if you fail a certain number of attempts, the lock jams. Better to invest points in something else. It was way better in fallout 2 actually, you can blow apart wooden doors with explosives, and you can lockpick most doors many number of times; but doing too many failed attempts jams the lock. Having lockpick sets in your inventory makes your lockpick skill increase. Mechanical doors require electronic lockpicks. Really hope that gets changed in later games :saddowns:
Fallout 3/NV's lockpicking was better than Oblivion's where the skill was useless.
Fallout 3/NV's lockpicking was better than Oblivion's where the skill was useless.
Actually, a high Security skill in Oblivion made things easier and such. If you're bad at lockpicking and face a "very hard" lock, prepare to lose a lot of time and break tons of lockpicks. Makes sense, because you know the basics but you still need a lot of practice. And practice = skill increases. In Fallout 3/NV it's just DON'T EVEN FUCKING TRY OPENING THIS LEVEL 50 LOCK WHERE YOU ONLY HAVE 48. I also have minugins and nuclear rocket launchers, a fucking door is not supposed to be such a cockblocking obstacle. [editline]10th April 2011[/editline] Same goes for Oblivion: remember that mission where you have to kill that witch? There was a "very hard" lock on a door made of old wood, paper and phlegm. I have warhammers and incredibly lethal Destrucion spells, and this thing is so brittle I can fucking see through it. BUT NO, I have to either pick it or find a key.
Speaking of which, I'm trying to get the Skeleton Key now. Sick of not having enough lockpicks.

Security is still useless since anyone can pick any lock regardless of the characters skill level.
What mods should I install for Fallout New Vegas?
I've never played the first two Fallout games, but this thread has got me interested. I'm not really big on turn based combat, but love the whole Fallout setting - do you reckon I'd still have fun with them?
Of course. The first Fallout game I've seen was 3 (a friend showed it to me), I told him I'd like to play it, but I have an old PC, and he lent me his Fallout Trilogy. At first I was a bit sceptic about playing a 1998 game, then I installed it. And there went 40+ hours of my life, playing Fallout 2 for the first time. On the other hand, the first time I played Deus Ex was in 2009, the same with Duke Nukem 3D, and I still loved them, so perhaps I just like old games? Anyway, if the graphics don't matter to you, go and play them. Tactics isn't very canon, but it's tons of fun. [editline]10th April 2011[/editline] Fuck, I shouldn't have replied before reading the rest of the page. Well, my point still stands.
If you can just break down doors, why pick any lock? Breaking a door would attract a lot of unwanted attention, not to mention not all doors would be breakable. And the Security skill changes A LOT of factors when picking locks.

But damn those texture fixes look nice.
For sneaky missions? Breaking a door would attract a lot of unwanted attention, not to mention not all doors would be breakable. And what "sneaky missions" are you talking about, I can't remember any missions where sneaking is the only option.
2.72 Gigabytes of saves. Shit.

Then again, I don't see what wrong in multiple pathways for a quest: either pick a lock and do your shady business without people noticing, or slam the shit out of the door with a Fatman and gun down everyone in sight. Really, I don't like how I have enough C4 to make Michael Bay blush, and I have to stare impotently at a pre-war, 200+ years old wooden door.

You just stand there like a retard while the 10+ enemies proceed to shoot and/or eat you? If all you have is a stealth pistol or somesuch weapon whilst playing a more stealthy character, then you would be better off just being stealthy and picking them off one at a time. Just because you have a couple sticks of dynamite doesn't mean you have the firepower to kill everyone in the room.
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Ausir/Honest_Hearts_trailer_is_almost_here Bethesda uploaded the trailer for Honest Hearts to youtube, apparently, but it's set to private now. So we're probably going to see it very soon.

How did they manage to get acess to Meet the Spy when it was leaked? Could we do it again?
How did they manage to get acess to Meet the Spy when it was leaked? Could we do it again?
That was something to do with the iPhone Youtube app or something. And it has been fixed.
I'm considering boing a run as The Pyro. Has anyone seen a mod that lets you get the Iconoclast Armor and Filtration Helmet from The Pit? If not, I guess I could make do with the Chinese Stealth armor and the Ranger Helmet...
Video has been removed. Well, I guess it should still come public soon enough.
God dammit I wanted to see it :sigh:
Playing right now, I'm a level 20 energy weapon wielding smooth-talker. Siding with the NCR and just got the Brotherhood to side with the NCR, but NCR is pissed they can't go to war with the Brotherhood... the fuck?
Started a new character after finishing my first playthrough, tagged Energy, Sneak and Unarmed and am playing Very Hard. What the fuck is this. I know it's Very Hard, but 40 Laser Pistol shots and several unarmed punches barely do anything to a Baby Gecko while it 2 hits me. I never knew Very Hard meant Impossible.
All it really does is make the enemies ridiculously powerful.
All it really does is make the enemies ridiculously powerful.
You do 1/6x damage to enemies while enemies do 6x damage to you, I think. That's how it worked for Oblivion anways. More on topic; started playing FO3 again after a few NV playthroughs, I was missing the crazy battles you had in the Wasteland, and the general feel of it. NV is a lot more polished and downright better in the fact that it's more like the original games, but FO3 is still great and I love it in all its craziness. I remember using VATs all the time, the cinematic kills were great. Punching a raider's head off with a power fist, watching a bullet fly through the air and into a super mutant's skull, blasting a few shots of plasma into some Enclave and watching them melt into a sticky pool of goo....such good times. Especially when i got EVE isntalled, the visual mod, not the game. Oh, and I almsot forgot about my favourite part: Fallout3.exe has stopped working
I liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas, I felt it had a better setting. [My personal Opinion]
I liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas, I felt it had a better setting. [My personal Opinion]
I liked the DC ruins area. After completing all that was to be completed, I always enjoyed equipping my team and raiding deep in the DC ruins. I also feel like there was more to explore. With that said I do think NV was better put together over all.

Fallout 3, on the other hand, gave you more space to explore, and I liked that.
So what do you think would be a good location for the next fallout game? I thought maybe new york but that would be too much like DC. Maybe the mid-west or the south?
