It's a cool game but I find the missions somewhat frustrating: I always lose my teammates and apparently you need a whole guide just to configure your airplane right so you get maximum power etc... Not to mention that I always run out of ammo...

Not really, it's more of an arcade game than the simulator 1946 is.
Wings of Prey for Steam is actually pretty good. Graphics are great and the flight model is almost as good as IL-2 when you are on simulation mode.
IL-2 still has the most content, and best editor.

yeah wings of prey is absolutely fantastic. it definitely gets under-rated which is a shame. it features the same engine and stuff as Apache: Air Assault, which is great for me because you can save replays much like in IL-2 (that's what recording is in IL-2, right? I've never used it). replays are great because you can capture more theatrical angles and get some fantastic stuff for footage and stills.
The game plays just as solid as IL-2; the only thing that's really any different is the HUD management (which can be disabled).

The only downside about it is that not everything is simulated, such as the bombing (you pretty much have to go third person in order to drop bombs because there's a ground indicator that will show you where the bomb will impact instead of calculating it yourself).

I found this on my attic, it used to be the greatest joystick ever and it still is.
Provided you can still find it somewhere to buy, because microsoft dropped support and making these sidewinders a long time ago.

We just had the most epic event happen ever. Randy and I are flying in TB-3s. I'm in front about 100 feet ahead of him, and he's flying just behind me at the same altitude and speed. Suddenly zenith is flying towards us in a FW-190. I'm thinking, "this guy is going to get owned by our collective firepower." Well he swoops in and our gunners start hammering away at him, but he's still flying in guns blazing. That's where it all fell apart. He managed to take off the final 1/3 of my left wing, causing me to spiral out of control downwards. The thing is Randy and I were flying about 200 feet off the ground, and the TB-3 being the slow moving box that it is graciously lands in the water, well kinda. As it turns out, my plane gets completely stripped of landing gear, wings, everything, BUT the main fuselage stays intact and bounces out of the water at warp speed. It manages to bounce to about 200 feet, right in front of Randy. He's got no time to react, and my fuselage makes full contact with his right wing, sending him to crash into the water and explode along with me.
Fun times.
