So has anyone been playing or did everyone stop just because i stopped the last few days?
i still play just about every day.
i'm having a hard-as-hell time getting a good setup going on this hotas though.
some people are terrified of public servers on hyperlobby, I guess.
Yay! My joystick arrived today! Fuck, now I have to clean my desk to fit this anywhere. Oh well, small price to pay.
Any way to get the steam version working with 1680x1050?

you'll get the hang of it after a while.
most pilots don't put enough leading in their shots and so the rounds never make impact. you'll figure it out eventually and nothing will stand in your way once you do

Here is something I saw on a mission today FAQ for beginners:
Wait till you get on somebodies tail, then line up your shots and fire in one second bursts. That way you save ammo and kill stuff :black101:

You see the distance markers on the other planes? That's their distance in kilometers. If you go into the "Arming" menu (in the quick mission editor, it's the circle to the far right of the plane selection), you should see something like "Machine Gun Calibration" or somesuch with the value set to 500m (the default value). This is the distance where your bullet streams are supposed to meet, doing more damage.
Aim for the engines and wings/control surfaces.

Optimally, I set my machine guns for 200m and my cannons for 250m. This seems to be a winning combination as engagements are often very close together in all dogfights I enter and I'd rather all my bullets go into his prop than into his wings or around them.

Agreed, I use 350 and 450 respectively. I usually trail behind people more than you do :v:

I don't have to trail behind people.
I get them the first time.
I started up the game, plugged in my Logitek pro flight 2 and started the tutorial. 40 minutes later i sit here, realizing that they didn't bother to make an auto configure for joysticks, and because my joystick isn't one of the rip-offs like the "cyborg" i have to manually assign keys myself.
No thanks, they can cram it up their stupid arses.
Now im off to play a game with some effort put in, i.e combat flight simulator 3. Realistic, authentic, fun to play and has some goddamn appreciation for the customer.

Oh no you might have to spend two minutes setting up controls in a game from 2001!
or you can stop being a lazy kid who expects everything to arrive to him and give the game a chance because it's worth at least that
Ow.
Ever heard of ergonomics?
Also, is it possible for you to not act like a pompous twit for a single page?

Oh im sorry, its just not everyone is as capable and "supa-leet-pro" like you are.
The way it took 10 minutes for you to reply with a meer sentence is noted.

Oh I'm sorry, it's just not no one is that lazy and impatient as to not setup their own controls for a flight simulator - everyone in this thread (apart from you, obviously) has gone through it and honestly couldn't care less whether they liked the game or not.
It took me ten minutes to reply on off chance, I like how you think it means something.
Staying on topic - just edit your controls it's not a huge hassle jeez.
Agreed, I use 350 and 450 respectively. I usually trail behind people more than you do :v:
I use around 400-500 for both.
Even though i always start blazing at around 200-300

Not to be another pompous twit, but what the fuck do ergonomics have to do with your button assignments, other than you should place your commonly used commands to the easiest to get to buttons? Who's to say your magical auto-configure would even put the functions you want where you think it should be?
I at least browse ANY game's controls, particularly with a sim.

I'm sure he's just meaning that the game is supposed to be ergonomic from the get-go, e.g. ease of control. I would never trust an autoconfig to assign buttons to my joystick unless it was completely specific for my joystick (even then its good to customize controls for a little individual ease of control). Either way, it's a silly reason to not bother with the game altogether.
Can you teach me how to take off in DCS Black Shark without fucking up my rotors?
taking off is easy, even level flight isnt so bad with the trimmer but i have lots of trouble using the weapon systems, its kind of stupid the training tracks dont work in the steam version and have been replaced with video's i doubt its that hard for them to redo them. a-10 better have real training tracks although with active pause it should be easier to learn the systems
if you havnt already go download these http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?end_pos=133&scr=products&lang=en you can watch them inside blackshark iirc but it messes up the aspect ratio
[editline]10th January 2011[/editline]
if anyone needs them i have x52 profiles for il2 and dcs black shark, also arma 2 but that one doesnt work so well. not sure if a non pro profile works on a pro stick, i know a pro profile cant be used on none pro hardware

I find that, for the X52, it's a much better option to personally customize your controls. With the multitude of buttons and hats and whatnot on the joystick it will help in the long run to personally establish what button performs which action. Either way, Black Shark has too many fucking controls that most end up remaining on the keyboard anyway. On the opposite spectrum, IL-2 doesn't have as many controls so I find fitting all of my buttons on my joystick to be a breeze ('cept eject and guided missile control).
a basic bs take off guide
1. start aircraft
2. press rctrl+enter
3. set trim (the diamond on the red diagram you just enabled) so the bottom of the diamond is resting on the horizontal line, this stops you rolling backwards (set it a bit higher if you have weapons loaded)
4. slowly increase the blade pitch until your in a 10m hover and raise wheels, raise it again slowly to about 3/4 to gain altitude
reset trim at a position that gives forward motion
the rotors only fall off if you max out the rotor pitch or tryto do things like barrel rolls (although that is possible without losing the rotors), if something starts beeping decrease the pitch angle

you think its worth getting a-10 from the dcs website? i cant decide what with it being beta having drm and supposedly the a-10 being more complex than the ka-50, might just get flaming cliffs 2 for now and wait until they put a-10 on steam
The x52 is officially broken out. Wings of Prey first, to get me back into flight sims. It's been probably 2 years since I've flown in a game, and that was BF2.

The DRM thing makes me really mad. You get eight activations and that's it.
however, for a beta (at least for me) it runs really well aside from when you fire the GAU and/or attempt to land and tear your gears off etc it lags really bad. The particle system seems fairly ultra unoptimized at the moment, but the game is absolutely solid otherwise.
For a sim, I'd say the sixty dollars is well worth it (the devs were working on some National Guard A-10 training tool and they canned it, so Eagle Dynamics evidently asked if they could use the info that the NG gave them to make this. I'm going to guess that most, if not all of the game's functions are spot-on). The ingame tutorials are really nifty so long as you read up on the game manual and learn the cockpit and it's fifty thousand buttons. I'm still trying to learn how to fly the damn thing.
Flight/takeoff itself isn't bad -- it's just like IL-2. The problem is arming weapons and using the electronics in general. It's a whole other playing field. DCS themselves said that the learning curve isn't as bad as Black Shark, but I've never played Black Shark. It being a helicopter sim, I'd say that's a pretty hard concept to learn... but A-10 is absolutely AWFUL for someone like me.
It's definitely super fun just to goof around in, though, and learning it has been a cinch (Despite it feeling like you have to go through a whole college course to learn how to play it)

At least, when it's all over, you will have solidarity in the fact that when someone asks "Does anyone know how to fly this thing?" you can raise your hand and fly a fucking A-10.

gahahaha yeah
i'm actually really excited about this game, though. It's SO GOOD. You have no idea at all how solid it is. With TrackIR, you can actually move around in the cockpit (move around as in lean) which just makes it SO fluid.
I might just start playing this exclusively, but IL-2 has been good to me, too, and online is hilarious.
I've been using my HOTAS in Project Reality as well and it works amazing.
